Daryl Dixon is an experienced zombie apocalypse tracker and survivalist who is part of the group of survivors formed by Rick Grimes.

Neglected by his parents since childhood, Daryl was always shadowed by his older brother Merle's evil ways and knew no other way to live. However, when Rick abandoned Merle in the dangerous city of Atlanta at the beginning of the advent of the undead, Daryl was able to start connecting with other people and became particularly close to Carol during the time he helped her search for her missing daughter.

Though he never abandoned his lone wolf facade, Daryl became extremely attached to his teammates and proved to be a valuable ally in a world consumed by chaos. During the desperate times caused by the Governor of Woodbury, he rose as the group's second-in-command and also established himself as Rick's right-hand man.

With his skills in hunting animals and his fearless efficiency in killing walkers, Daryl proved to be a formidable tool for any survivor, as the bandit Joe recognized when he welcomed him into his group after Daryl became separated from everyone following the destruction of the prison. However, Daryl proved to be a man of honor, who knew well where his loyalties lay, and did not hesitate to betray Joe when he saw him endanger Rick and the others.

He was inevitably taken prisoner on a train car at Terminus, reuniting with most of the group. Miraculously, he managed to escape and helped Rick free the rest of his friends. Together with Carol, he returned to Atlanta when he saw the possibility that Beth was there.

Sure enough, there she was, but tragedy struck again, and she ended up dead. This event once again put Daryl in a dark sadness, which almost destroyed him, if not for Carol, who recommended that he take some time to mourn his friend. Upon arriving in Alexandria, and some time passed, Daryl embarked with Aaron on a supply mission. Both unexpectedly fell into a trap of the Wolves, being rescued by Morgan.

Daryl was one of the people who got caught up in a mission to divert a horde on its way to Alexandria. In the process, he got separated from the group and was assaulted by three unknown assailants, one of them named Dwight, who stole his motorcycle and crossbow. These people, in turn, were fleeing from another group. Daryl met up with Abraham and Sasha again, and on the way to Alexandria, the people who were chasing Daryl's assailants threatened to kill the three of them. Daryl took them out with a rocket launcher, and he, Abraham and Sasha returned home. He eventually used the rocket launcher a second time to destroy the part of the horde that had managed to enter Alexandria, and things ended well.

Months later, Daryl and Rick encountered a man nicknamed Jesus, and while they initially had issues with him, they ended up discovering a new community and a larger world. Part of this new world was The Saviors, the group that Daryl had already had problems with. These people, specifically Dwight, who was now a part of them, murdered Denise, and in an attempt to get revenge, Daryl and others ended up prisoners of this hostile group. Finally, they met Negan, the leader of The Saviors, and Daryl exploded in rage after Negan murdered Abraham, attacking him and, in a way, causing Glenn's death.

Daryl was taken prisoner and spent several days locked up in the Sanctuary, flatly refusing Negan's offers to join the Saviors. This experience led Daryl to have a great hatred towards Dwight and Negan for all the torture they put him through, especially the former, who practically took away everything that had once belonged to him. Fortunately Daryl managed to escape the place and reunite with his friends, accompanying Rick in search of help to end the threat of the Saviors.

Forced into hiding, Daryl reunited with Carol outside the Kingdom, but after hiding the truth about the situation and the deaths from her, Daryl took refuge in Hilltop and forgave Maggie for causing Glenn's death. Daryl eventually helped obtain weapons from a women's community and had the difficult task of not killing Dwight when he showed up in Alexandria asking to be their double spy in order to take down Negan. With the arrival of the infamous leader in Alexandria, the group almost lost the battle had it not been for Sasha's sacrifice and the arrival of reinforcements, driving the bandits from their home.
With the war already underway, Daryl helped to trap the Saviors inside their home by leading a horde of walkers. He then proceeded to kill every Savior in his path, including Morales, and then together with Rick obtained a super machine gun. Soon the ideological differences between him and Rick became apparent, erupting into a fight that ended with Daryl and Rick separating and the former joining Morgan and Tara to try to kill the remaining Saviors.
Back in Alexandria, he soon realized his mistake when Negan showed up at the door and bombarded the community. After bidding farewell to a dying Carl and escorting the survivors to Hilltop, Daryl engaged in a battle against Simon's Saviors that culminated in several deaths due to his own fault.

After the war ended and they emerged victorious, Daryl disagreed with letting Negan live, but first he spared Dwight's life on the condition that he would never return. Daryl secretly conspired with Maggie and Jesus in order to make Rick understand that Negan had to die.

A year and a half later, Daryl grew tired of having to lead the Sanctuary and asked Rick for someone to take his place. Carol offered to take his place. Daryl helped build a bridge and came into conflict with one of the Saviors. Seeing how the women of Oceanside put an end to the Saviors who had hurt them in the past, Daryl and Maggie set their plan in motion to finish off Negan, distracting Rick to prevent him from intervening. Unfortunately, all of this created a chain reaction that ended with the supposed death of their friend in the explosion of the bridge he so wanted to build.

Daryl is a man in his mid-40s,[1] with dark blond hair and piercing blue eyes. His trademark feature is the crossbow he always carries on his shoulder as well as his great skill at annihilating walkers. He frequently has dead squirrels hanging from his belt,[2] and is not afraid to get dirty.[3] Being a competent explorer and a fervent hunter, he exemplifies a style of his own that is fairly basic in appearance, but obviously focuses more on functionality than aesthetics. Beginning in the second season, Daryl's leather vest with "angel wings" is probably one of the most recognizable items of clothing on the show,[4] and in the third season he began wearing a poncho,[5] which also became one of the most emblematic pieces of clothing for the character. Among the accessories he usually carries with him are a knife and a red handkerchief that he uses in the back pocket of his pants. He also has a habit of smoking and his preferred means of transportation are motorcycles.[6] He is used to throwing insults, yelling when offered emotional support, and does not hesitate to be rude to anyone.

From the beginning, Daryl was presented as the renegade member of the group. Initially a foul-mouthed and ill-tempered peasant, over the seasons Daryl has become an unlikely hero[7] and although he may seem aloof at times, he is a selfless champion[8] and a trusted friend.

Daryl grew up under the stigma of being Merle's younger brother[10] and so is often volatile and resorts to violence when he feels threatened, though he is significantly more level-headed and rational than his older brother. During his childhood, he spent long periods of time alone, and during these periods of loneliness he learned to fend for himself and adopted a tough survival mentality.[11] Being emotionally damaged from never receiving genuine affection, Daryl considers himself a lone wolf who prefers the woods to civilization,[12] as he is afraid of getting emotionally involved with people.

Daryl grew up in the mountains with his neglectful family, consisting of alcoholic parents and an absent brother. His mother, besides being a wine lover, was a fan of Virginia Slims cigarettes and loved to smoke in bed. One day while Daryl was playing with some neighborhood kids who had bikes, the fire siren alerted them that something was happening and when they went to check, Daryl discovered that it was his house that had caught fire, with his mother inside.

Daryl then moved in with his father and brother in a seedy cabin,[15] though Merle's constant trips to and from juvie left him to grow up practically alone. On one occasion, Daryl even got lost and wandered into the woods for nine days, eating berries and wiping his butt on poison oak, with no one noticing his absence.

Throughout their childhood, Daryl and Merle were constantly abused by their father and as a result were left with several scars on their bodies. [18] As they grew up, Merle also began to mold Daryl in his image and likeness but without giving him the support that as an older brother he should have given him. [19] Eventually Merle ended up leaving home when he was old enough and as a result Daryl had to be the only one to endure his father's abuse.

Daryl then began to follow his brother around in everything he told him and one day while they were high at a drug dealer's house, Merle insulted one of the man's favorite TV shows and they started fighting, so Daryl had to step in to defend his brother and ended up vomiting after getting punched in the gut. Merle and the dealer started laughing so hard that they forgot about the problem.
