가을의 어느 추운 날, 성의 창문을 두드리는 가느다란 빗줄기가 리드미컬하고 거의 진정되기까지 한 소음을 만들어내고 있었다.

드레이코는 종이접기를 하며 지루함을 달래려 애쓰고 있었다. 마법약 수업은 평소처럼 늦게 시작되고 있었고, 스네이프 교수는 아직 나타나지 않았다.

— 흠...

드레이코는 포터와 그 일행을 힐끗 바라보며, 어떤 가시 돋친 말을 내뱉을지 고민했다. 그의 시선이 옮겨갈 때마다 머릿속에서는 대화 도중 끼워 넣을 만한 비꼬는 말들이 맴돌았다.

마침내 문이 천천히 열리고 스네이프 교수가 교실로 들어왔다. 그는 혼자가 아니었다. 곁에는 검은 머리의 소녀가 서 있었는데, 그녀의 이목구비 중 무언가가 스네이프 본인을 연상시켰다.

‘닮았어... 친척인가? 말도 안 돼. 그런데 전학생이 왜 여기서 나와? 쟤는 마녀가 맞긴 한 거야?’ — 드레이코가 미간을 찌푸렸다.

교수는 자세한 설명 없이 지각한 것에 대해 짧게 사과한 뒤, 학생들에게 전학생인 카산드라 스네이프를 소개했다.

교실 여기저기서 수군거리는 소리가 들려왔지만, 드레이코는 그저 신경질적으로 뺨을 움찔거릴 뿐이었다. 그사이 소녀는 그의 뒷자리에 자리를 잡았다.
