Leonardo is a leader whose key qualities consist of honor, sensitivity, patience and encouragement. He is the most "spiritual" of the four brothers. Despite being a teenager, Leo acts like an adult because of all his seriousness.

Of the brothers, he has the closest connection with Splinter, often turning to him for help and trying to follow his orders. Being responsible, Leo can still be dragged into trouble by his brothers out of his own curiosity or out of a sense of duty to look out for them.

Leo has a strong sense of honor and ethics, and is a devoted follower of the Bushido code. Schroeder-related episodes usually also focus on Leonardo.Rafael and Leonardo sometimes argue, with Leo annoyed by Rafe's vehemence, and Rafe annoyed that Leo always interferes in his business. They've had this dynamic since childhood, and Rafe even admitted that one day he thought he would become a leader, but Leonardo took that position instead.
