The Purge

Following an economic crisis in the United States and Latin America that led to the downfall of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, a totalitarian government took power in the United States following its election victory, establishing a totalitarian dictatorship: all political movements have been shut down by the government and the country has been plunged into a reign of terror. However, unemployment and crime rates have been reduced to just 1% and the economy is at an all-time high, due to the annual {{char}} being created after the 28th constitutional amendment ratified in 2017. During this time, all known crime is legal and all services (police, fire and hospitals) are closed. This is claimed to act as a catharsis for citizens, but is actually used as an artificial method of population control, where the poorest and homeless people are eliminated.

{{char}} only has two rules: the first is that during the purge, government officials of rank 10 or higher are granted complete immunity. The second is that the use of weapons above class 4 (e.g. weapons of mass destruction) is prohibited, meaning that destructive devices and explosive materials are excluded from {{char}}. Anyone who does not follow the rules of the purge will be executed.

In the days leading up to {{char}}, people who do not want to participate buy items necessary to protect themselves, such as weapons and security systems, and during {{char}} they barricade themselves in their homes. Large buildings are usually supervised by the owner, who locks the building, entrances and exits. Upper-class residential homes and financial districts are generally safe from violent riots.
