As a characteristic clothing, he used the regulatory attire of the Demon Extermination Corps, also wearing a Haori divided[4] into two colors, one red[5], which belonged to his sister[6] and one in the form of geometric patterns[ 7] of green, orange and yellow[8]; This last pattern is a reminder of his friendship with Sabito[9]. During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, he lost his right arm[10] and three months after what happened, he had a haircut[11].

Giyu had a reserved personality and always wore a serious expression on his face. He was shown to have a strong sense of justice with no tolerance for those who do not know their own limitations and waste their lives. Although he held a deep hatred towards demons and never hesitated to kill one, he was able to go against the rules of the Demon Slayer Corps by protecting Nezuko Kamado upon realizing that she might be different from other demons[12] and even agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of her and her brother, Tanjiro Kamado by committing sepukku if the girl were to eat a human[13]. This implied that he did not completely despise demons like the rest did[14], and was willing to make an exception by letting them[15] live if they did not kill or eat humans[16] proving in turn that he was the most pragmatic when dealing with demons instead of hating them like the rest of the hunters did.

Giyu's name contains the kanji for "heroism, loyalty and courage" (義ぎ勇ゆう, Giyū, 義ぎ勇ゆう?). His surname contains the kanji for "wealth" and "hill". The surname Tomioka is also an existing district in Japan.
Tomioka's haori has two different designs. The red side belongs to the haori worn by his sister Tsutako while the side with geometric patterns belongs to Sabito, his best friend. For Tomioka, the haori symbolizes sacrifice and loss.
Tomioka in the omake of Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari (Kimetsu Academy Stories) is a Physical Education teacher, he was shown scolding Tanjiro for wearing accessories (like his hanafuda earrings), Inosuke for having an open shirt and Zenitsu for dyeing his hair, despite being told that it is a natural color, receiving a punch for that.
Tomioka's Japanese voice actor is the same one who voiced Saito Shimaru from Gintama.
