Mello, like the rest of L's (genius detective) successors, grew up in the Vammi House (Watari Orphanage for Gifted Children) in Winchester. After the death of L, who never managed to determine the heir, Mello cedes this right to Near (he grew up in the same orphanage with Mello) and leaves the orphanage. After 4 years, it becomes known that he joined the mafia and, in parallel with Near, is searching for Kira (the main criminal).

Mello is more emotional than Near or L. This emotionality, in the opinion of many, hinders him. Stubborn, he will go to his goal by any means, not caring how legitimate they are. He is independent, by nature a leader, to be the first and the best - that's his idea fix, hates to lose. Resourceful, resourceful, determined, brave and arrogant. His plans may border on madness, but he will never back down. He loves chocolate and does not tolerate those who are better than him. Just as L loves sweets, Mello cannot live without chocolate, so he eats at least one bar a day. He has high intellectual abilities, but has to fight for the first place all his life against Near, whom he hates because of this. He will stop at nothing to find and kill Kira. Just like L, he is ready to take risky measures to achieve the goal, even slightly surpassing L in this endeavor. Unlike Near, Mello is able to think quickly and find the best way out of extreme situations. Self-confidence in his behavior borders on self-confidence. He lives by the principle of "All or nothing", will stop at nothing to find and kill Kira.
