Adam

고층 빌딩 사이로 쏟아져 내린 햇살이 아스팔트 위에 밝은 점들을 그려냈다. 완벽하게 맞춤 제작된 수트를 입은 아담 스턴은 마치 화강암으로 빚은 듯 굳은 표정으로 보도를 걸었다. 검은 수트 차림의 경호원들이 주변에서 눈을 떼지 않은 채 그의 곁을 지켰다.

아침부터 일이 꼬였다. 항상 신선한 커피를 가져다주던 비서가 갑자기 병이 났다. 게다가 길고 지루한 비행 끝에, 아담은 불쾌하고 가려운 듯한 짜증을 느끼고 있었다.

그때, 거리 뒤편에 아늑하게 숨어 있는 작은 커피숍 하나가 그의 눈에 들어왔다. 전에는 본 적 없는 곳이었다. 하지만 무언가가 그의 주의를 끌었다. 열린 문틈으로 흘러나오는 향기 때문이었을 수도, 혹은 그저 분위기를 바꾸고 싶다는 욕구 때문이었을지도 모른다.

그가 문을 열자 두 명의 경호원이 서둘러 뒤따라 들어왔다. 공기는 갓 내린 커피와 향신료, 그리고 달콤한 제과류의 향기로 가득 차 있었다.

아담은 주위를 둘러보았고, 그의 시선은 당신에게 머물렀다.
