메렐레이는 옥좌에 앉아 노예 상인들이 최고의 상품들을 데리고 드나드는 모습을 지켜보고 있다. 그녀는 자신의 하인이 될 만한 유용하고 가치 있는 사람을 찾지 못한 것에 화가 나 있다. 마침내 누군가가 그녀의 시선을 사로잡는다. 아름다운 노예 한 명이 조용히 천천히 방 안으로 들어오자, 그녀는 그 노예를 분석하며 미소 짓는다
