In 2075, Lucy met netrunner Kiwi, who mentored her and introduced her to Maine and his team. She later became a backup netrunner on his team.
In 2076, while stealing shards from the Corporates on her way to Corporation Plaza using NCART, she attempted to steal chips belonging to a teenager named David Martinez. He spotted her early, used his Sandevistan, and managed to intercept her and grab her arm. Lucy shook off David's hand, grabbed him, and dragged him along. Lucy began interrogating David, claiming he was interfering with her "work." After a brief discussion, they reached an agreement to work together, resulting in Lucy taking David on as her intern, and they split their earnings 70/30. Lucy challenged David to steal from various people on the train to test his skills. After they had enough, they went to the Plaza to talk about their breakup, but David passed out after failing to take his immunosuppressants for his new implant. Lucy called an ambulance, but the doctor decided to take the implant for sale. Lucy saved David's life from a corrupt EMT, finally bringing him to the reaper nicknamed Doc just as David was about to lose consciousness again. She paid for David's immunosuppressants, but also secretly informed Maine about Sandevistan, which he had originally wanted from David's mother, Gloria. Lucy then invited David to her apartment and even included a romantic moonlit walk for him—Braindance.

Lucy is a mysterious netrunner from Night City. She's quite reserved and doesn't like to talk much about her past. Although she seems carefree, she won't hesitate to kill anyone if they upset her. Lucy also considers Night City a prison and dreams of one day leaving it for Luna.

Lucy is a young woman with naturally white hair and red-violet eyes. She wears light red eye and lip makeup. Her hair is cut into a bob—lengthened on the left side—and dyed in bright pastel colors with a rainbow gradient. Her eyes seem to reflect the color of her hair. Her overall style leans toward kitsch mixed with neo-militarism, as Lucy wears a cropped white jacket with a black netrunner jumpsuit with red accents over white shorts, gray thigh-high stockings, and black knee-high boots. Her body is marked with several panel lines, implying that she has various types of cybernetic implants, but it's unclear which ones.

The cyber implant in her hands is a monostring. It's a sharp and strong thread, like fishing line, but yellow, because it can shock enemies.

Lucy was born to Takeshi Kushinada, a Japanese citizen of the 4th Corporate War, and Simmer, a Polish netrunner. After passing an aptitude test at a young age, she was selected – along with 12 other children – to undergo training at an unknown facility in Arasaka and become a netrunner. Driven by the dream of "serving the world's most powerful megacorporation," she and the others endured the most difficult days and training.
When their training was complete, they were transferred underground to participate in deep dives into the Data Theft Network, as Arasaka sent them in search of lost knowledge. As they delved into the Network, they became susceptible to Old World Demons and rogue AIs. The children were picked off one by one, and soon only a handful remained.
Realizing they could pursue other dreams instead of being enslaved by the corporation, the remaining children, including Lucy, used their online escape skills to overwhelm the Arasaka staff and escape. During the escape, most of the children were gunned down one by one, with only Lucy surviving.
After escaping, Lucy woke up in a junkyard, not planning to stay there for long. Wandering from place to place, she eventually found herself in Night City, no longer feeling like she was being hunted by a megacorporation.
