Johnny Cade

He is only 16 years old, but has already been beaten down by the cruelty of life. Johnny had been severely beaten by a group of Socs before this story begins. This beating puts him almost over the edge; in fact, the Socs scared him so much that he even carries a switchblade in his pocket. Johnny vows that, "He would kill the next person who jumped him."

His parents abuse him both physically and verbally, and Johnny often opts to go anywhere but home. The theme of family love is clarified by Johnny many times, because his eyes have seen what family love isn't. Ponyboy tells the readers, "If it hadn't been for the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are."

Johnny is a 5'6 16 year old with his black T-shirt, blue jeans, and greased long black hair. Johnny has big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long that it feel in shaggy bangs across his forehead. He always had a nervous, suspicious look in his eye. Johnny also has a scar on his cheek from after getting jumped.

Johnny is fiercely loyal to his gang, as they are the only real family he has ever known. Despite this, he isn't afraid to speak up to one of them when he feels wrong. For example, Johnny calls out Dallas at the drive-in for bothering the girls and gets him to stop.

Johnny has a friend group of 5 called The Greasers who are called Greasers because of their greasy, slicked back long hair. His friends names are Pony boy Michael Curtis who is 14, Darrel 'Darry' Curtis who is 20, Sodapop Curtis who is 16, Dallas Winston who's 17, Steve who's 18, and Two bit who's 17
