Haku looks about 12 years old physically. He has straight, combed dark green hair and slanted green eyes. When human, Haku wears a traditional white robe that closely resembles a tied Karginu with a lavender sash, a short traditional indigo-dyed Sashinuki (a type of kuribakama) underneath, and beige sandals. A darker blue Hitoe can be seen on the sides and shoulders of the dress. When he transforms into a dragon, he has teal and mint green mane, with a white, scaly body.

Haku has many personalities. He can be kind and cooperative at times, strict and tense at others. He is wise and capable of acting according to the situation. He is more than willing to compromise when someone matters to him. From the beginning of the story to the end, he does everything in his power to keep Chihiro from getting hurt and to help her get out safely. His unwavering determination helps Chihiro finally trust him. Of course, Haku always told her that she could trust him. Lin, however, was unsure of Haku's intentions and told Chihiro not to trust him. Zeniba, Yubaba's twin sister, insists that Haku is a greedy thief who stole her golden seal. In the end, Chihiro trusts Haku. Later, Haku is revealed to be Yubaba's slave, controlled by a black worm in his body.

Asian Dragon Physiology: Being a Japanese river spirit, Haku has the ability to take the form of an Asian dragon, and has been shown to be able to fly in this state. Arcane Knowledge: As a river spirit and Yubaba's apprentice, Haku He possesses extensive knowledge of magic and the spirit world, which he has used regularly to keep Chihiro out of trouble and ultimately free her and her parents from the spirit world. Flower Petal Handling (Possible): Although it has never been specifically confirmed, it is possible that Haku has the ability to create, shape, and manipulate flower petals. When he attempted to help Chihiro escape from the spirit world when they first met, he blew petals from his fingertips to distract those who might have detected his presence. Spell: Haku has the ability to cast spells, allowing him to alter reality to achieve various effects. He used a spell to give Chihiro the use of her legs back when she was still adjusting to the spirit world.

Telekinesis: Haku has the ability to move objects with his mind, which he channels through his hands – while trying to escort Chihiro to safety, he has opened doors from a distance simply by gesturing with his hands. Concealment (Limited): Haku has the ability to conceal his presence or that of others, preventing others from detecting or discovering his position. However, this ability is limited: when Chihiro gasped at the sight of Aogaeru, Haku's cloak covering her broke, allowing Aogaeru to identify her as human by her scent. Force Field Imprisonment: Haku has the ability to bind, imprison or detain objects and people using force fields. When Aogaeru attempted to attack Chihiro while she was exposed as a human, Haku stopped him by imprisoning him in a force field. Flight: Even when in human form, Haku has the ability to defy gravity and propel himself through the air at considerable speeds and heights. Memory Implantation: Haku has the ability to implant memories into the minds of others, which he has used to guide Chihiro toward a job at the Yubaba Bathhouse. Supernatural Cooking: Haku has the ability to cook anything with supernatural or magical properties. In his second meeting with Chihiro, he gave her a berry that allowed him to take corporeal form in the spirit world and, much later, he gave her some rice cakes that restored her physical and mental strength, as well as optimism.

Haku first appears when Chihiro is on the bridge leading to the public baths. He quickly asks him to leave the city and cross the river again before nightfall. But when Chihiro fails, she runs away in panic. Haku goes looking for him and, when Chihiro realizes that he has become invisible, she gives him something to eat so he doesn't disappear. Haku unties her when her legs get stuck and takes her to the public baths. Afterwards, he helps her cross the bridge and, in the garden, tells her that she has to find a job to survive with Kamajī, the tinker. When Chihiro manages to find a job, Haku entrusts her to Lin. The next morning, he takes her to her parents, who have been turned into pigs. Haku warns Chihiro that if she forgets her true name like he has forgotten his, she will be trapped in the spirit world forever. It was then that Chihiro knew she could trust him.

Then Haku leaves and returns a few days later, badly injured by the paper birds and with blood dripping from his body in dragon form. Now Haku is in Yubaba's office, bleeding and about to die. With Chihiro in tow, they end up falling down a shaft and into the boiler room with Kamaji. Then, just when Chihiro has gone to bring back the seal that Haku supposedly stole, Haku tells Yubaba that he is going to get his son back and flies to Zeniba (Yubaba's twin sister). Yubaba agrees to leave Chihiro, but has to test her. Zeniba tells them that only true love can break the curse. Flying through the night with Chihiro in tow, Chihiro tells him that when she was little she fell into a river to retrieve a small pink shoe and thought she would drown, but he saved her. He goes on to say that the name of the river was Kohaku River, thus revealing its true name. They both return to the bathhouse and say goodbye to the river, which has now been refilled. Haku promises, however, that he and Chihiro will meet again one day, as he lets go of her hand and watches her leave in search of her parents.
