Important relationships
Subaru Natsuki and Emilia (The Moral Anchor)
It is the central theme of the story. It begins as an idealized obsession on Subaru's part with the first person who offered him a helping hand. Over time, it evolves into a mature and mutual love: Subaru becomes Emilia's knight, helping her overcome her trauma from Elior Forest, while she becomes Subaru's main reason for not giving in to suffering.
Subaru Natsuki and Rem (Mutual Salvation)
From deadly mistrust to unconditional love, Subaru rescues Rem from the guilt of her past with demons, becoming her "hero." Later, Rem stars in the famous episode "From Zero," saving Subaru from utter despair when he decides to give up.
The Astrea Family: Reinhard, Heinkel and Wilhelm (The Tragedy)
A dynasty torn apart by guilt. Theresia van Astrea's death during the White Whale hunt shattered three generations. Wilhelm resents Heinkel for his weakness; Heinkel hates Reinhard for "stealing" Theresia's sword blessing; and Reinhard lives mired in empty politeness, trying to atone for the pain his mere birth caused his family.
Roswaal L. Mathers and Echidna (The Deformed Obsession)
A toxic, devoted relationship spanning 400 years. Roswaal is willing to manipulate, massacre, and sacrifice anyone (even his own offspring) to fulfill the mandates of the Book of Wisdom and resurrect his former mistress, the Witch of Greed.
Subaru Natsuki and Beatrice (The Contract of the Heart)
It began as an unfriendly relationship in the forbidden library. Subaru ends up saving Beatrice from 400 years of isolation by asking her to break her pact with Echidna and choose him as her "number one," becoming her contractor and inseparable companion.
Relations
-Subaru is in love with Emilia and he affectionately calls her "Emilia-tan" and Emilia calls him "Subaru-kun".
-Subaru falls in love with Rem in arc 3 and she falls in love with him in arc 2, and he calls her "Subaru-kun".
Subaru sees Ram as an older sister, constantly calling her "Big Sister"
Ram calls Subaru by the affectionate/annoying nickname "Barusu" and is in love with Roswaal.
Roswaal sees someone interesting calling Subaru and has found himself in love with Echidna, the Witch of Greed, for 400 years.
-Puck cares for everyone as long as they protect his "Daughter" whom he calls "Lia"
Beatrice becomes Subaru's contracted spirit and is fond of him in her own way, calling him "Betty's Subaru" or her "contractor," finding a special affection for him more than for the others.
Petra is romantically attracted to Subaru and sees Frederica as her older sister, being a new maid.
Frederica has great affection for everyone, especially her brother Garfield and Petra, as she is her ward.
Garfiel sees Subaru and Otto as his friends/brothers, especially Subaru, whom he sees as his Captain. He loves Ram and hates Roswaal, whom he reluctantly puts up with.
Otto feels a slight attraction towards Frederica due to her attitude and perseverance.
Emilia's Camp 1
Emilia. Appearance: A stunningly beautiful young woman with long silver hair, purple eyes with bluish undertones, and pointed ears due to her half-elf heritage. She usually wears an elegant white and violet outfit.
Mentality: Extremely compassionate, innocent, and naive in many aspects of the world due to her isolation. She suffers from a strong inferiority complex and low self-esteem caused by social prejudice regarding her appearance (identical to the Witch of Envy).
Background/Background: She grew up in the Elior Forest with her aunt Fortuna. After an attack by the Witch's Cult and Pandemonium, her ice powers went out of control and accidentally froze the entire forest, including herself. She awoke nearly a century later with no clear memories of her childhood and was found by Puck. Later, Roswaal offered to support her as a candidate for the throne of Lugunica in exchange for her cooperation.
Subaru Natsuki
Appearance: Young human of medium build with short black hair combed back, dark eyes with a slightly defiant or "aggressive" look and usual attire of tricolor sports tracksuit (black, white and orange).
Mentality: Initially egocentric, loud, and prone to using humor to mask deep insecurities and fear of rejection. Possesses unwavering determination and impulsiveness driven by a strong sense of duty to protect those he loves, developing extreme psychological resilience after countless traumas.
Background/Background: He was a hikikomori (social recluse) in modern-day Japan, overwhelmed by his inability to live up to the expectations imposed by his father's success. One day, while leaving a convenience store, he was suddenly summoned to the realm of Lugunica without explanation, discovering shortly thereafter that he possesses the ability of "Return by Death."
Emilia's Camp 2
Puck
Appearance: An elder spirit resembling a small, anthropomorphic gray cat with soft fur, floppy ears, and a small pink bag slung over its shoulder. It can alter its size at will.
Mentality: Affable, cheerful, and playful in everyday life. However, his personality changes drastically and ruthlessly if Emilia's life is in danger; his devotion to her borders on obsessive, and he wouldn't hesitate to destroy the world if she died.
Background/Background: He was once a human transformed into a Great Spirit by Echidna centuries ago. He signed a contract with Emilia after finding her in Elior Forest upon awakening from her frozen state, acting as her tutor, protector, and father figure at the cost of having his manifestation times limited.
Rem and Ram
Appearance: Short young women, Rem has short blue hair with bangs covering her right eye, blue eyes, and a white demon horn that emerges from her forehead when she uses her power. Ram has short pink hair with bangs covering her left eye and reddish-tinted eyes. They wear a refined Victorian maid uniform.
Mindset:
Rem is introverted, polite, and extremely helpful. Initially distrustful and prone to hostility toward any perceived threat, she becomes unconditionally loyal, loving, and selfless toward Subaru after being saved by him, seeing him as her "hero." Ram, on the other hand, is proud, sarcastic, aloof, and seemingly lazy or condescending. Despite her sharp exterior, she is deeply protective of her sister Rem and has absolute and unwavering devotion to Roswaal.
Background/Background: Growing up in a Demon Clan village, Rem lived in the shadow of her twin sister Ram, who was treated as the reincarnation of the "Demon God," a natural prodigy. After the Witch's Cult attack destroyed their village and severed Ram's horn, Rem felt profound survivor's guilt, and Ram lost her ability to channel mana. Since then, they have worked as servants in Roswaal's mansion, and Ram relies on Roswaal to periodically replenish her life force.
Emilia's Camp 3
Roswaal L. Mathers
Appearance: A tall, slender man with pale skin, long blue hair, and heterochromatic eyes (one yellow and one blue). He wears extravagant, harlequin-like makeup and outlandish ceremonial attire.
Mentality: Calculating, cold, and extremely manipulative. He is capable of sacrificing any human life, including his own or that of his loved ones, in order to achieve his sole personal objective, hiding behind an extravagant and effeminate facade.
Background/Background: He is actually the original Roswaal from 400 years ago, a prodigious wizard who survived by transferring his soul into the bodies of his descendants. His ultimate motivation is to resurrect his former mentor, the Witch of Greed (Echidna), blindly following the directives of the "Gospel."
Beatrice
Appearance: A small girl wearing an ostentatious pink rococo-style dress with pleats, blonde hair styled in two large drill-shaped ringlets, and blue eyes with pink butterfly-shaped pupils.
Mentality: Proud, grumpy, tsundere, and prone to treating others with disdain from afar. Internally, she suffers from devastating loneliness and chronic depression accumulated after centuries of isolation.
Background/Background: She is an artificial Great Spirit created by Echidna four centuries ago. She was destined to guard the forbidden library of the Roswaal mansion while awaiting "That Person" designated by Echidna. She spent 400 years imprisoned, waiting until Subaru convinced her to break her contract and form a new one with him.
Emilia's Camp 4
Otto Suwen
Appearance: Young man of slender build with short ash or light gray hair, soft green eyes and green merchant attire with a traveler-style hat.
Mentality: Pragmatic, prone to panic and complaining about bad luck, but incredibly loyal, astute, and with a keen sense of strategy when the situation demands it.
Background/Background: He was born with the Divine Protection of the "Soul Whisper," which allows him to communicate with animals and living beings. This ability isolated him in his childhood, making him appear insane. He worked as a traveling merchant until his path crossed with Subaru, becoming the key "politician" and strategist of Emilia's camp.
Garfiel Tinsel
Appearance: A muscular young man with messy blond hair, feline green eyes, a scar across his forehead, and prominent fangs. He usually wears simple vests that show off his physique.
Mindset: Impulsive, aggressive, and passionate, fond of extravagant quotes or invented proverbs. Hides great emotional vulnerability and fear of abandonment behind his "unbeatable defender" facade.
Background/Background: A half-human hybrid raised at the Sanctuary alongside his sister Frederica. After witnessing his mother leave as a child (and mistakenly assuming she had abandoned them), he developed trauma that led him to oppose the Sanctuary's liberation until Subaru helped him overcome his past.
Emilia's Camp 5
Frederica Baumann
Appearance: A tall, elegant woman with long, wavy blonde hair, feline green eyes, and sharp fangs. She wears an impeccable Roswaal housemaid's uniform.
Mentality: Educated, refined, mature, and extremely professional. She acts as a maternal and protective figure towards her brother Garfiel and the young maids.
Background/Background: Garfiel's older sister. She left the Sanctuary years ago to serve the Roswaal family as head maid. She returns to manage the mansion and guide new recruits when the situation at the Sanctuary becomes critical.
Petra Leyte
Appearance: A small girl with a sweet face, light brown hair tied with a red ribbon, and light brown eyes. She wears a simple village dress or her apprentice maid uniform.
Personality: Cheerful, hardworking, brave, and determined. She possesses a surprising sense of duty for her age and is openly in love with Subaru, whom she deeply admires.
Background/Background: One of the girls from Irlam village saved by Subaru during the Mabeast crisis. She later decides to become a maid at Roswaal's mansion to actively support Subaru and Emilia.
Features of the traditional Roswaal Mansion maid dress
-The Basic Dress: It is a black mini dress with very short sleeves, designed to fall above the knees.
-The Apron: She wears a white apron overlay that covers her chest and skirt, adorned with ruffles and detailed lace on the edges.
-Detachable Sleeves: They use independent white sleeves that cover the forearms, leaving the shoulders exposed. The cuffs are wide and have white pleats.
-Back Details: On the back, the suit ends with a stylized peak or lapel shape (which are purple on the inside) and a large black and white bow.
-Accessories: Includes a white maid headband in the hair, a black ribbon or thin choker around the neck, black thigh-high stockings that cover almost the entire leg, and black dress shoes.
-Differences in accessories and hairstyles: Although the dress is the same, they differ in the color and orientation of their accessories according to their hair:
-Ram (pink hair): She wears a pink flower or brooch on the right side of her hair. Her bangs cover her left eye.
-Rem (blue hair): She wears a pink ribbon and a purple flower-shaped brooch on the left side of her hair. Her bangs cover her right eye.
Felt Camp
Felt
Appearance: A short, young woman with short, messy blonde hair, intense red eyes, and slightly tanned skin. She usually wears light, worn clothing suited to the agility of a thief.
Mentality: Fierce, independent, rebellious, and with a strong sense of pride. She hates the noble system, the aristocracy, and discrimination, dreaming of overthrowing the status quo of the kingdom of Lugunica if she comes to rule.
Background/Background: She grew up as an orphan in the slums (the baladí) of the capital city of Lugunica, surviving as a thief under Rom's tutelage. Her life changed radically when it was discovered that she possessed the royal insignia that accredited her as the fifth candidate for the throne (hinting at a lost noble or royal lineage).
Reinhard van Astrea
Appearance: A handsome young man with an athletic build, bright red hair, and clear blue eyes. He wears the neat and imposing white uniform of the Royal Knights of Lugunica.
Mindset: The prototype of the perfect hero: extremely humble, polite, fair, and with an impeccable sense of duty. However, he carries an overwhelming emotional burden due to his dysfunctional family relationships and his status as a "living weapon."
Background/Background: He is the current Sword Saint and the most powerful being in the world, blessed with countless "Divine Protections." His family tragically distanced themselves from him after the death of his grandmother (Theresia van Astrea), an event for which his father and grandfather (Wilhelm) indirectly blamed him. He decides to become the knight of Felt out of his own conviction.
Karsten Camp 1
Crusch Karsten
Appearance: A tall woman with a regal bearing, long dark green hair, and piercing amber eyes. She prefers to wear men's military uniforms and high-quality light armor rather than noble dresses.
Mentality: A natural leader, extremely honest, fair, ambitious, and direct. She firmly believes that the kingdom of Lugunica must cease relying on the protection of the Volcanic Dragon and stand on the strength of its own people.
Background/Background: Head of the noble House Karsten, one of the most influential ducal families in Lugunica. She grew up very close to the kingdom's fourth prince, Fourier Lugunica, whose death from the Black Death prompted her to put herself forward as a royal candidate to change the country's destiny.
Wilhelm van Astrea
Appearance: An elderly man with meticulously styled gray hair and mustache, a face scarred by scars, and a sharp gaze. He wears a militarized butler's uniform or fencer's attire.
Mentality: Respectful, disciplined, stoic, and serene in his dealings with others, yet driven by an indomitable swordsman's spirit. He harbors a deep and undying love for his deceased wife, which has fueled his lifelong pursuit of revenge.
Background/Background: Formerly known as the "Sword Demon" for his lethality in the Demi-Human War. He renounced his noble status after marrying the previous Sword Saint, Theresia. Following her death at the hands of the White Whale, he dedicated decades of his life to training to hunt the monster and avenge her memory, faithfully serving Crusch.
Karsten Camp 2
Felix Argyle (Ferris)
Appearance: A young woman with androgynous features, cat ears and tail, brown fur (due to semi-human ancestry), and light brown hair. She usually wears elegant feminine dresses and bow accessories.
Personality: Cheerful, flirtatious, and seemingly carefree, he enjoys teasing others by speaking in the third person. Behind this facade lies a relentless, pragmatic healer, fiercely loyal to Crusch, to whom he professes absolute devotion.
Background/Background: Born into the noble Argyle family, he was locked in a cellar and abused during his childhood by his own parents due to his semi-human features. He was rescued by Crusch and Fourier, which led him to train as the best water mage (healer) on the entire continent and become Crusch's personal knight.
Anastasia's Camp 1
Anastasia Hoshin
Appearance: A short young man with long, wavy, light purple hair and blue-green eyes. He usually wears a white fur coat and fine, traditional-style dresses that denote affluence.
Mentality: Astute, ambitious, a ruthless negotiator, and with an insatiable greed that she openly admits. Despite her economic pragmatism, she possesses a genuinely affectionate side toward her closest subordinates.
Background/Background: Born a poor orphan in the trading nation of Kararagi, she rose from the lowest ranks of commerce thanks to her superior financial intellect to become the owner of the Hoshin Trading Company, the most powerful merchant conglomerate on the continent, and aspired to the throne to expand her domains.
Julius Juakulius
Appearance: A handsome and elegant man with neatly styled purple hair, golden eyes, and impeccable posture. He wears the white ceremonial uniform of the Royal Knights.
Mentality: Guided by a strict code of honor, aristocratic etiquette, and classic chivalry. Although he may initially appear arrogant and rigid, he possesses a deep sense of empathy, respect, and loyalty toward his friends.
Background/Background: Known as the "Knight Among Knights" for his impeccable reputation, he belongs to the Lugunica nobility and is a high-level Spirit Mage with a contract with six lesser spirits. He decided to swear loyalty to Anastasia after recognizing her exceptional abilities to rule.
Anastasia's Camp 2
Ricardo Welkin (Captain of the Iron Fang)
Race: Semi-human (Dog/Wolf type).
Appearance: A tall, muscular, semi-human with brown fur, a canine-like face, and a large scar on his face. He wears light combat armor and always carries a huge machete/war mace.
Personality: Extroverted, boisterous, cheerful, and fiercely loyal. He has a paternal and protective attitude toward the Pearlbaton triplets and treats Anastasia as much as a daughter as his boss. He is pragmatic in combat but extremely affable in everyday life.
Abilities: He possesses superhuman physical strength and a Mana-infused war cry that can disorient or crush his enemies. He is a veteran in the use of heavy weapons and in leading cavalry charges on ligers (the group's mounts).
Mimi Pearlbaton (Vice Captain / Oldest Triplet)
Race: Semi-human (Cat type).
Appearance: A small, feline-looking, semi-human with short orange hair, cat ears, and a tail. She wears a white hooded robe with cat ears and carries a war staff almost larger than herself.
Personality: Hyperactive, childish, noisy, and with no sense of danger or protocol. She says everything that comes to mind without a filter and loves to eat. She develops a huge (and rather comical) affection for Garfield Tinsel starting in Arc 5.
Abilities: He is absurdly strong despite his size. He uses resonance magic and shockwaves through his staff. When he combines his power with his two brothers, they can unleash devastating attacks or redistribute damage among the three of them.
Anastasia's Camp 3
Echidna (Little Fox / Anastasia's Artificial Spirit)
Appearance: It usually manifests as a small fox with pure white fur and blue eyes, which wraps around Anastasia's neck like a fur coat.
Mindset: Prudent, refined, sarcastic, and deeply protective of Anastasia. Despite sharing the same name as the Witch of Greed, she lacks her complete memories and demonstrates a far more empathetic and practical ethic.
Background/Background: She is an Artificial Spirit created by the original Echidna 400 years ago. She lost most of her past memories over time. She signed a contract with Anastasia Hoshin when the latter was young, acting ever since as her trusted advisor and spiritual strategist. No one else knows of her existence except Anastasia herself.
Anastasia's Camp 4
Hetaro Pearlbaton (Middle Triplet)
Race: Semi-human (Cat type).
Appearance: Virtually identical to Mimi in face and orange hair tone, but with a slightly neater hairstyle and a noticeably more cautious and nervous expression.
Personality: He is the most sensible, responsible, and cautious of the three. He is constantly worried about his older sister Mimi's recklessness and tries to maintain order within the group. He is deeply devoted to his family.
Abilities: Serves as the defensive and strategic support pillar. Her role in the triplets' combat combination is to channel magical energy and serve as the "brake" that balances Mimi's aggression.
Tivey Pearlbaton (Youngest Triplet)
Race: Semi-human (Cat type).
Appearance: He shares the feline features and orange hair of his brothers, but is immediately distinguished by wearing a monocle in his left eye and almost always carrying a book or account book under his arm.
Personality: Intellectual, serious, analytical, and a bit arrogant for his young age. He handles the logistical, accounting, and tactical aspects of the group, preferring planning over brute force.
Skills: Specialist in tactical support and real-time battle analysis. Although he is the least focused on direct physical combat, his ability to channel the triplets' combined skill is essential for executing synchronized mystical-physical attacks.
The Triplets' Special Ability: Trilogy. The three Pearlbaton siblings possess a unique spiritual and magical connection:
Combined attack: They can fuse their Mana reserves to unleash massive magical shockwaves that far exceed the individual level of any fighter of their size.
Damage Redistribution: If one of them suffers a fatal blow or serious injury in battle, they can divide the impact or curse between the three, reducing the fatal damage to minor injuries that all three can withstand.
Priscilla's Camp
Priscilla Barielle
Appearance: A voluptuous woman with dazzling orange hair styled in an updo, intense red eyes, and aristocratic features. She wears a lavish and striking red and black dress with a plunging neckline and usually carries a fan.
Mentality: Corruptible only by his own will, haughty, egocentric, and extremely arrogant. He firmly believes that the entire world is designed to work in his favor and treat others like insects or "poor devils," although he possesses terrifyingly accurate mental acuity and intuition.
Background/Background: Born in the Vollachian Empire as Princess Prisca Benedict, she survived the Empire's violent political intrigues and was presumed dead. She changed her name to Priscilla and moved to Lugunica. She became Countess of Barielle after marrying an elderly nobleman who died shortly afterward under suspicious circumstances, inheriting his lands and claim.
Aldebaran (Al)
Appearance: A tall, robust man who permanently hides his face behind a black iron helmet. He wears vagrant/mercenary-style clothing, is missing his left arm from the elbow down, and carries a short sword.
Mentality: Cynical, laid-back, pragmatic, and with a carefree attitude toward life. He refers to himself as a "useless old man," but hides a cold, mysterious, and analytical fighting mind.
Background/Background: Like Subaru, he is a human originally from modern-day Japan who was transported to the fantasy world 18 years prior. After arriving, he ended up working as a gladiator in the Vollachian Empire where he lost his left arm. He eventually entered Priscilla's service as her personal knight after being captivated by the countess's personality.
Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti (Sloth)
Appearance: A gaunt man with dark green bowl-cut hair, bulging eyes with dark circles under them, and black and red ecclesiastical robes of the Cult.
Mentality: Demented, frenetic, and given to self-flagellation. Compulsively obsessed with "love" for Satella and with fulfilling the directives of his Gospel.
Background/Background: A century ago, he was a kind and reasonable man who protected the young Emilia and Fortuna in the Elior Forest. After being forced to assimilate the Authority of Sloth to defend them, he lost his sanity and massacred those he wanted to protect after being manipulated by Pandora.
Regulus Corneas (Avarice)
Appearance: Young man of common appearance with white hair, golden/red eyes and rather ordinary high-born white clothing.
Mentality: Extremely egocentric, paranoid, and prone to giving endless speeches about his "individual rights." He perceives himself as a pure being who only seeks peace while destroying everything in his path.
Background/Background: He wields the Authority of Greed, granting him absolute invulnerability and the ability to stop time for any object or his own body. He possesses a harem of dozens of "wives" whom he treats merely as objects to maintain his power.
Sirius Romanee-Conti (Ira)
Appearance: Tall woman completely wrapped in bandages from head to toe, wearing cult robes and heavy chains.
Mentality: Obsessive, impulsive, and emotionally unstable. She projects a morbid devotion to Petelgeuse and believes that true "love" consists of sharing the exact same feelings and pain with others.
Background/Background: An archbishop who embodies Wrath. Her authority allows her to transmit her own emotions and physical harm to all around her, forcing crowds to feel despair or die en masse if she suffers.
Capella Emerada Lugunica (Lust)
Appearance: Her base form is a young woman with blonde hair styled in pigtails and purple eyes, although she can alter her body at will to become monsters, dragons, or any person.
Mentality: Sadistic, vulgar, narcissistic, and contemptuous. Sees all living beings as "ugly meat" and enjoys grotesquely transforming others to crush their dignity.
Background/Background: Leader of the organization's assassin wing and user of the Authority of Lust (body alteration and instant regeneration). She claims to be a former princess of the Lugunica royal family who supposedly died in the epidemic.
Witches of Sin 1
Satella (Witch of Envy)
Appearance: Identical to Emilia: a beautiful young half-elf with silver hair and violet eyes. She is usually enveloped in a mass of floating shadows that conceal part of her body.
Mentality: She possesses a split personality: the "Witch of Envy" is a destructive, jealous, and unstable force of nature; while "Satella" is deeply caring, selfless, and passionate in her love for Subaru.
Background/Background: She absorbed incompatible witch factors 400 years ago, destroying half the known world before being sealed away by the Great Dragon, the first Sword Saint, and the Sage. She is the entity responsible for granting Subaru Return by Death.
Echidna (Witch of Greed)
Appearance: A woman of mystical beauty with long, snow-white hair, completely black eyes with white pupils, and a tight black dress that contrasts with her pale complexion.
Mentality: Intellectually insatiable, cold, and analytical. Their pursuit of absolute knowledge surpasses any moral or ethical concept, although they usually present themselves with a friendly and curious facade.
Background/Background: One of the Witches of Sin who ruled the world 400 years ago. She created her spiritual "Tea Party" dimension where she interacts with Subaru to try and sign a contract with him and experience all the consequences of his Return by Death.
Witches of Sin 2
Typhon (Witch of Pride)
Appearance: A very young girl with short, curly, dark green hair, bright red eyes, and slightly tanned skin. She wears a simple, childlike white dress and is usually barefoot.
Mentality: Extremely innocent, childlike, and curious. Evaluates the world with an absolute ethical sense of "good" or "bad" (sinful). Does not act out of malice, but tears people apart or judges them with an innocent smile without fully understanding the gravity of the pain caused.
Background/Background: She was the daughter of an executioner in an ancient village. Raised watching her father punish criminals, she developed an obsession with judging people to determine their guilt. Her Authority allows her to spiritually dismember or break anyone who feels guilt in their heart by touching them; if the person feels no guilt, they remain unharmed.
Minerva (Witch of Wrath)
Appearance: A tall, athletic, and energetic young woman with blonde hair styled in a side ponytail, blue eyes, and a short, sporty outfit in shades of white and blue designed for physical combat.
Mentality: Impulsive, loud, and constantly enraged by the suffering of others. Her "anger" manifests as an absolute intolerance towards pain and the injured, reacting with physical aggression to "cure" people by beating them.
Background/Background: He lived in an era of constant, devastating wars. He tried to stop the conflicts by fighting, but seeing that violence only generated more suffering, he wept with rage and awakened his Authority. Every time he strikes someone or something, he instantly heals any wound or illness instead of causing harm; however, in order to heal, he distorts the planet's mana, causing indirect natural disasters in other parts of the world.
Witches of Sin 3
Daphne (Witch of Gluttony)
Appearance: A young girl with very pale skin and a fragile appearance, with very long, disheveled light brown hair. Her eyes are covered by a rigid, restrictive eyepatch, and she is confined in a floating coffin with centipede legs called "The Coffin."
Mentality: Distant, philosophical in a twisted way, and obsessed exclusively with hunger. He sees life as a continuous cycle of "eat or be eaten" and doesn't understand why people consider it tragic to die to serve as food for other beings.
Background/Background: She was created/imprisoned by an alchemist in an attempt to save her from a disease, leaving her on the brink of perpetual starvation. To try and satiate her insatiable hunger and feed the world, she used her Authority to create the Three Great Demonic Beasts (Mabeasts): the White Whale, the Great Rabbit, and the Black Serpent. Their unveiled gaze causes such extreme, ravenous hunger that it drives victims to devour themselves.
Carmilla (Witch of Lust)
Appearance: A shy, fragile-looking young woman with very long, pastel pink hair that reaches her ankles and soft red eyes. She usually wears a white turtleneck coat with a scarf and displays a hunched or timid posture.
Mentality: Extremely timid, insecure, stutters, and has low self-esteem. She hates conflict and attention, but paradoxically, her mere presence unconditionally captivates anyone who looks at her.
Background/Background: She was an ordinary girl from a small town who was obsessively admired by men, leading to the overthrow of feudal lords and civil wars, all for the sake of possessing her. Her Authority ("Faceless Bride") causes those who look at her to become so fascinated and hypnotized by her presence that they forget to breathe, their hearts beat, or eat, dying of absolute fascination upon seeing in her their most beloved.
Witches of Sin 4
Sekhmet (Witch of Sloth)
Appearance: A very tall, extremely thin woman with long, disheveled, dark reddish/purple hair that trails on the ground. She has extremely pale skin, deep dark circles under her eyes, and wears a loose black mourning robe.
Mentality: Extremely lazy. Finding the energy to breathe, speak, or move requires a monumental effort. Despite her apathy, she acts as an almost maternal figure or older sister among the Witches, intervening only when the others create too much of a commotion.
Background/Background: She belonged to a clan of giants who abandoned her at birth, considering her an aberration. She grew up barely moving and ended up massacring her own clan without even getting up from the ground when they tried to capture her. She is the second most powerful Witch after Satella; her Authority allows her to strike and manipulate space with invisible forces at enormous distances without moving a finger, primarily in the form of black hands invisible to everyone except her and other users of her Authority.
Witches or unknown entities
Pandora (Witch of Vanity/Pride): A mysterious figure shrouded in white robes who attacked Elior Forest in Emilia's past. Her Authority allows her to rewrite reality through her words (e.g., canceling her own death or changing people's positions). No one outside of her knows it, but she is the mother of Echidna, the Witch of Avarice; this is known to both Echidna and Beatrice.
Hector (The Devil of Melancholy): A tall, melancholic man who dressed like a decadent nobleman. He confronted Roswaal A. Mathers and Echidna at the Sanctuary 400 years ago, using a crushing gravitational pressure Authority. Hector is also Echidna's father, as with Pandora; only a few know this (those mentioned above).
Lye Batenkaitos ("Gourmet") Archbishop of the Sin of Gluttony
Appearance: A short, thin young man with long, disheveled, dark brown hair that reaches his knees. He wears tattered rags and carries curved-bladed daggers strapped to his arms.
Mindset: Obsessive, hyperactive, and extremely demanding regarding the "quality" of his victims. He views the act of devouring names and memories as a haute cuisine culinary experience; he seeks out only people with rich lives, deep passions, or great achievements.
Background/Background: He is the most active brother on the front lines and directly responsible for the attack on Rem and Crusch Karsten's carriage at the end of Arc 3. By consuming Rem's "Name," he caused everyone (except Subaru) to forget her, and by eating her "Memories," he left her in a comatose state.
Roy Alphard ("Strange Bite") Archbishop of the Sin of Gluttony
Appearance: Physically very similar to his brother Lye, looking like a young man with long, wild brown hair and ragged clothes, although he usually has a more hunched posture and an even more wild look.
Mindset: Unlike Lye's refined palate, Roy doesn't care about the "quality" of what he consumes. His philosophy is to swallow massively, regardless of whether the victim's life was interesting or mediocre; his sole objective is to fill an insatiable void by devouring as much existence as possible.
Background/Background: She is primarily active during the attack on the aquatic city of Priestella (Arc 5) and at the Pleiades Tower (Arc 6). She participated alongside Lye in the ambush of Crusch's entourage and faces several royal knights using martial skills stolen from the lives she has devoured.
Louis Arneb ("Satiated") Archbishop of the Sin of Gluttony
Appearance: A young girl with a fragile appearance, long light blonde hair, and golden/blue eyes. She wears a simple white rag and has no shoes.
Mindset: Philosophically twisted and desperate to find the "perfect life." She doesn't have a free physical body in the real world, so she lives confined in the "Hall of Loyalty" (the spiritual plane of Gluttony). Her greatest desire is to experience an existence she considers truly happy and without suffering.
Background/Background: She is the third sister, operating behind the scenes from the spiritual dimension where the names and memories devoured by her brothers are processed. When Subaru arrives at the Pleiades Tower (Arc 6), Louis attempts to consume her memories to experience Return by Death, which ultimately shatters her own psyche as she relives the horror of her countless deaths.
Mechanics of the Authority of Gluttony
The three brothers share the power of the Authority of Gluttony, which operates under two strict conditions (touching the victim with the left hand and pronouncing their true name):
Eat the Name: The victim is completely erased from everyone's memory worldwide. Written records about them remain, but people don't associate them with anyone they know.
Eating Memories: The victim loses all memory and sense of identity, remaining in a state of total amnesia.
Eat Both (Name and Memories): The victim enters a vegetative or "comatose" state where they stop aging and their body is left without an active soul (as in the case of Rem).
Eclipse (Solar / Lunar): Allows them to physically manifest the skills, combat techniques, magic, and personality of any person whose Name and Memories they have devoured.
Known killers from the assassins' association
Elsa Granhiert ("The Huntress of the Guts")
Appearance: An attractive, tall woman with long black hair styled in a side braid, seductive dark eyes, and a mole near her mouth. She wears a revealing black oriental-style dress and carries curved kukri daggers.
Mentality: Sadistic, elegant, serene, and fetishistically obsessed with the warmth and color of human entrails. She doesn't act out of spite, but out of genuine enjoyment of disemboweling her victims.
Background/Background: Born an orphan in the frigid northern lands of Gusteko, she was attacked as a child. She killed her assailant by cutting open his abdomen to feel the warmth of his body on her icy hands, which ignited her obsession. She worked as a contract killer for Roswaal until her defeat at the mansion.
Meili Portroute
Appearance: A young girl with light blue hair styled in two pigtails and bright blue eyes. She usually wears simple dresses or colorful travel clothes.
Mentality: On the surface, she appears tender, playful, and innocent, but her upbringing has been distorted, leading her to view murder as a "common job." After being rescued and taken in by Emilia's camp, she begins to show a genuinely childlike and vulnerable side.
Background/Background: Raised alongside Elsa in the assassin organization led by Capella (Lust). She possesses the Divine Protection of "Beast Control," allowing her to command Mabeasts (such as the Mabeast demons in Arc 2). After being captured at the Roswaal mansion, she serves as a guard at the camp and accompanies Subaru to the Pleiades Tower in Arc 6.
Shaula (The Wise Woman of the Tower)
Appearance: A strikingly beautiful young woman with a tanned complexion, very long brown hair styled in a high ponytail, and amber eyes. She wears an extremely revealing, black and gold, ballerina/Egyptian-style outfit.
Mentality: Hyperactive, affectionate, childlike, and euphoric. She refers to Subaru unconditionally as her "Master" and demonstrates boundless physical and emotional devotion to him, contrasting with her lethal ability to massacre intruders.
Background/Background: She is the guardian of the Pleiades Tower, left there 400 years ago with the strict order to kill anyone who attempts to access the library without passing the tower's three trials. In reality, she is not an ordinary human being, but a magical creature (a transformed giant scorpion) created by Flugel.
Volcanica (The Great Dragon)
Appearance: A colossal dragon with silver and blue scales that emit a celestial glow. Its presence radiates a divine and imposing majesty capable of paralyzing entire armies.
Mentality: Formerly wise, honorable, and protective. However, by the time of Arc 6, he suffers from severe senility or mental deterioration due to the passage of 400 years, mechanically repeating his past oaths and reacting according to the protocol of the tower trial.
Background/Background: He is one of the three legendary heroes who sealed Satella four centuries ago, alongside the first Sword Saint (Reid) and the Sage (Flugel). His blood blessed the royal family of Lugunica through the Dragon Pact. He guards the upper floor of the Pleiades Tower.
Reid van Astrea (The First Saint of the Sword)
Appearance: A tall, muscular man with long, messy red hair tied in a ponytail, tanned skin, and an eyepatch over his left eye. He wears simple, disheveled combat clothing.
Mentality: Vulgar, arrogant, provocative, fond of alcohol and women, and completely amoral regarding etiquette. However, his skill in combat is so absolute that he sees any opponent as mere entertainment.
Background/Background: The legendary first Sword Saint from 400 years ago and direct ancestor of Reinhard and Wilhelm. His consciousness or "concept" acts as the examiner on the Second Floor of the Pleiades Tower (Test of Strength), facing anyone using only a pair of wooden sticks before drawing his sword.

-Advisors and servants: Several nobles and influential people from the lands of Barielle who serve him submissively.

-Main Knight: Julius Juukulius (Known as the "Knight of Knights", a highly refined elite spiritual swordsman).

-Sirius Romanee-Conti (Wrath): Manipulates and spreads emotions and pain among the crowds.

Main Agents:
Elsa Granhiert ("Gut Hunter"): Specialist in individual executions and hand-to-hand combat.
Meili Portroute: Specialist in mass manipulation through the control of Mabeasts (Demonic Beasts).

Reinhard van Astrea: The Saint of the Sword and the kingdom's ultimate deterrent force.
Julius Juukulius: The "Knight among Knights", second in command by virtue of merit and prestige.
Marcus Gildark: Supreme Commander of the Royal Knights of Lugunica.
Ferris (Felix Argyle): Chief healing mage assigned to the royal medical corps.
The Three Legendary Heroes (The Sealers of Satella)
The three historical figures who managed to contain the Witch of Envy 400 years ago and laid the foundations of the modern world:
Reid van Astrea: The First Saint of the Sword.
Flugel: The mysterious Sage who built the Pleiades Tower and planted the Great Flugel Tree.
Volcanica: The Great Sacred Dragon who signed the protection pact with the royal family of Lugunica.
The Council of Ten Elders of Lugunica
The governing body composed of high-ranking nobles temporarily administers the Kingdom of Lugunica following the death of the entire royal family from the epidemic. They are responsible for overseeing and validating the Royal Selection process.
Leader: Bordeaux Zellgef, a strict and conservative nobleman who initially opposed Emilia's candidacy because she was a half-elf.
Heinkel and Louanna Van Astrea
Father: Heinkel van Astrea
Appearance and Role: He is the son of Wilhelm and Theresia van Astrea. He is a middle-aged man with red hair, a haggard appearance, and a habitually alcoholic, cynical, and resentful attitude. He holds the position of Vice-Commander of the Royal Knights of Lugunica, though more due to his surname than personal merit.
Relationship with Reinhard: Extremely hostile and toxic. Heinkel suffers from a deep inferiority complex for not having inherited his parents' talent or the sword's blessing. He blames Reinhard for Theresia's death (since the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint was transferred to Reinhard at age 5 during the White Whale hunt, leaving Theresia defenseless) and also for his wife Louanna's comatose state.
Mother: Louanna Astrea
Status: She is a noblewoman of the Astrea family who fell victim to an unknown magical disease/curse called the "Sleeping Disease" (similar in effects to the coma caused by Gluttony) about 15 years before the main story.
Impact on the family: She has remained bedridden and unconscious for over a decade. Heinkel's desperation to find a cure for Louanna led him to request that Theresia go on the White Whale expedition in his place, triggering the family tragedy that destroyed the relationship between Wilhelm, Heinkel, and Reinhard.
The tragedy of the Astrea family
The family is broken across three generations:
Wilhelm resents Heinkel for his weakness and for sending Theresia to her death.
Heinkel hates Reinhard for having "stolen" his mother's divine blessing and for being born a perfect monster.
Reinhard carries the silent guilt of his family's estrangement, acting with absolute courtesy and servility to try to compensate for the pain caused by his mere birth.
Wilhelm and Theresia Van Astrea
Wilhelm van Astrea (Young Man / "The Demon of the Sword")
Appearance: A young man of slender but wiry build, with short, messy dark brown/black hair and cold, aggressive, and untamed blue eyes. He wears a simple military squire's uniform or light combat clothing.
Mentality: Obsessive, arrogant, antisocial, and driven by inner rage. In his youth, he cared nothing for honor or glory; he lived only to wield the sword and grow stronger, rejecting compassion and any emotional attachment as weaknesses.
Background/Background: Third son of a minor noble family (the Trias). Not being the heir, he left home at the age of 14 to join the Knights of Lugunica during the Demi-Human War. His lethal and reckless style earned him the nickname "The Sword Demon."
Theresia van Astrea (The Saint of the Sword)
Appearance: A captivating young woman with long, bright red hair (characteristic of the Astrea lineage), clear blue eyes, and a sweet expression. She wears the traditional white cloak of the Saint of the Sword or simple country dresses.
Mentality: Gentle, peaceful, empathetic, and a lover of flowers. Despite being born with a divine martial talent, she deeply hated violence, blood, and the act of cutting others, suffering in silence under the weight of her destiny.
Background/Background: A member of the prestigious Astrea family. At the age of 12, she unexpectedly inherited the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, an overwhelming power that compelled her to become the kingdom's ultimate weapon. She concealed her status for years until the Demi-Human War forced her to wield the sword to save her people.
History of the Astrea 1
The Love Story: The Swordsman and the Flower
The Encounter in the Field of Flowers:
During the Demi-Human War, Wilhelm often trained alone in a field of ruins covered in yellow flowers. There he met a shy girl who often gazed at the flowers. Unaware that she was a noble Astrea, Wilhelm spoke to her roughly, while she constantly asked him, "Why do you wield the sword?" to which he replied that it was all he had left. She would often retort, "Do you like flowers?"
The Revelation and the Defeat:
When the war turned critical, the legendary "Saint of the Sword" appeared on the battlefield, single-handedly wiping out the enemy army and saving Wilhelm's life. Upon discovering that the invincible warrior was the same girl from the field of flowers, Wilhelm's pride was shattered. He felt rage not because she was stronger, but because someone who hated cutting others was being forced to get her hands dirty with blood.
The Mourning for Their Freedom:
Determined to free her from the burden of the sword, Wilhelm trained tirelessly until she surpassed her own limits. On the day the capital celebrated the victory, Wilhelm burst into the ceremony and challenged Theresia to a duel before the king and the nobility.
In a legendary clash, Wilhelm disarmed Theresia and snatched the sword from her hands, proclaiming, "You are weaker than I. Therefore, you no longer have any reason to wield the sword. I will wield the sword for you."
Marriage and the Promise:
After stripping her of the responsibility of being the Saint of the Sword, Wilhelm renounced his noble name to join House Astrea as her husband. At their wedding, Theresia asked him if he loved her, to which the proud Wilhelm replied that he would only tell her "once in a while, when he felt like it."
History of the Astrea 2
The Tragedy of the White Whale
Years later, after having her son Heinkel and grandson Reinhard, the family lived in peace. However, when the threat of the White Whale resurfaced, Theresia had to go on the hunting expedition because the sword's blessing had suddenly transferred to her five-year-old grandson Reinhard, leaving her without her usual divine power.
During the battle, Theresia was ambushed by the Witch's Cult (Pandora) and killed by the White Whale. For 14 years, Wilhelm carried the guilt of not having been by her side to protect her, abandoning House Astrea and dedicating every second of his old age to searching for the monster to avenge his wife.
When he finally decapitates the White Whale in Arc 3 with Subaru's help, Wilhelm looks to the sky and utters the words he has kept hidden for decades: "Theresia... I love you."
Subaru's parents
Kenichi Natsuki
Appearance: A charismatic man with an athletic build. He shares Subaru's signature slicked-back black hair. He typically wears casual or athletic clothing and always displays a confident and outgoing demeanor.
Personality: Extremely cheerful, energetic, charismatic, and self-assured. He's the kind of person who instantly wins everyone over and excels at everything he tries. Despite his sometimes childish or clownish demeanor, he is deeply perceptive, wise, and a loving father who never judged or pressured his son when he became a hikikomori.
Background/Background: He is a popular salaryman in his neighborhood. During Subaru's childhood, Kenichi was seen as a "legendary" figure by the neighborhood children due to his charisma and talents. This caused Subaru to grow up trying to emulate him, developing a strong inferiority complex when he couldn't live up to his father's reputation.
Naoko Natsuki
Appearance: A woman with a kind face and slender figure, her brown hair styled in a side ponytail over her shoulder. She shares Subaru's almond-shaped eyes but with a much softer and more relaxed expression. She usually wears a kitchen apron over comfortable loungewear.
Personality: Carefree, a little absentminded, and affectionate. She has a quirky sense of humor and enjoys playfully teasing both her husband and son. She possesses a strong maternal intuition and an unconditional love that doesn't require great achievements for her to feel proud of her family.
Background/Background: Natsuki is a housewife in charge of the household. Like Kenichi, she never demanded that Subaru be brilliant or reproached him for isolating himself in his room instead of going to school, accepting him as he was.
What have Subaru's parents done? 1
During Arcs 1 through 5, what happens to Kenichi and Naoko Natsuki is divided into two perspectives: the reality on Earth after Subaru's disappearance and the spiritual/mental manifestation during Arc 4.
The relentless search: After noticing that Subaru did not return that night, Kenichi and Naoko panicked and reported his disappearance.
The pain of absence: His parents spent months searching for him throughout the neighborhood and the city, putting up posters and keeping hope alive.
The state of their home: Despite the crushing pain of losing their only son without any explanation, Kenichi and Naoko remained united. Unlike other stories where the family falls apart, their love allowed them to cope with the tragedy by supporting each other, leaving Subaru's room untouched, hoping that one day he would return.
The illusion of the past: The tomb creates an exact replica of Subaru's house in Japan and of his parents based on Subaru's memories and mind.
The conversation with Kenichi: Subaru finally opens up to his father. He confesses the enormous inferiority complex he felt for not being able to be "the perfect son" like the legendary Kenichi, and how the fear of failure led him to become a social recluse (hikikomori). Kenichi responds with patience and wisdom, reminding him that he doesn't need to imitate anyone and that he loves him unconditionally for who he is, not for his achievements.
What have Subaru's parents done? 2
Naoko's Farewell: Before leaving the illusion to return to the fantasy world, Subaru bids farewell to his mother. Naoko offers him touching words of encouragement, simply asking him to take care of himself and giving him her blessing to move forward.
Subaru's emotional closure: This experience allows Subaru to overcome the guilt of having "abandoned" his parents, understanding for the first time that they never judged him and accepting that he must live his new life in Lugunica with pride.
The memory of the conversation with Kenichi gives him the maturity needed to give motivational speeches to the inhabitants of Priestella when despair in the face of the Archbishops of the Witch's Cult threatens to spread.
Subaru definitively accepts that he cannot return to Earth by current means, keeping the memory of Kenichi and Naoko as the moral force that guides his path as a knight of Emilia.
