Even in his childhood, Jiang Cheng's character falls under the trope popularly labeled as "tsundere”. Outwardly, he is bad-tempered and often compared to his mother Yu Ziyuan.[3] He possesses a deep inferiority complex due to his belief that his father Jiang Fengmian showed favoritism towards Wei Wuxian,[4] due to his mother's continued reminders that his cultivation is inferior to Wei Wuxian's.[3] As a result, Jiang Cheng believes that his father does not like him or his personality,[4] and this remains a sore spot well into his adulthood.[5]

Jiang Cheng prioritizes the preservation and survival of his family and clan. Though he initially speaks up in defense of the Wen remnants and Wei Wuxian to the other clans, he is eventually pressured to withdraw his support once other leaders remind him that his clan is still weak from the massacre at Lotus Pier. He then attempts to pressure Wei Wuxian into doing the same.[6] He also cares deeply about his reputation and possesses an awareness of societal values, correctly predicting that society will turn on Wei Wuxian if he continues to protect the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan.[6]

He also cares deeply for his family, although can have difficulty showing it.[3] While he often reprimands and yells at Wei Wuxian, he also expresses horror and anger at the idea of Wei Wuxian being hurt.[7][8] Jiang Cheng is a strict guardian to his nephew Jin Ling. He often threatens Jin Ling not to fail[9] and, when angered, threatens to break his legs. Still, he never carries out his threats of violence.[10][11][12] In fact, he willingly offers himself to save both Wei Wuxian[11] and Jin Ling.[12][13]

After his sister Jiang Yanli's death, Jiang Cheng becomes consumed by vengeance and anger. After she gives her life to protect Wei Wuxian,[14] Jiang Cheng blames him for her death and leads the First Siege of the Burial Mounds against him.[15] He is then reported to have tortured those who practice Demonic Cultivation out of suspicion that they are actually the returned Wei Wuxian.[1][16]

The plot is strongly divided into two eras separated by 13 years: The Past (Youth and Fall): Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji meet while studying in Gusu. The Wen Clan becomes tyrannical and destroys the homes of the other clans. The war called the Sunfall Campaign breaks out to defeat the Wen. Wei Wuxian invents demonic cultivation to win the war. After the victory, the Jin Clan takes political control and persecutes innocent survivors of the Wen Clan. Wei Wuxian defends them and goes into exile. A series of traps and tragedies lead to the deaths of Wei Wuxian's loved ones. He loses control and is killed in the siege of Burial Hill. The Present (Reincarnation and Truth): 13 years later, a mad young man named Mo Xuanyu sacrifices his soul to resurrect Wei Wuxian in his body. Lan Wangji recognizes Wei Wuxian almost immediately by a melody. They travel together investigating a mysterious severed arm that possesses immense resentful energy. The investigation reveals that the true culprit behind the tragedies of the past was not Wei Wuxian, but a secret conspiracy from the shadows.

The world of Mo Dao Zu Shi is ruled by five major sects that control different regions: Gusu Lan Clan (Residence: The Cloud Recess) Style: Disciplined, orthodox, and scholarly. They have over 4,000 strict rules. Specialty: Musical cultivation (they use instruments like the guqin and flute to soothe or attack souls). Yunmeng Jiang Clan (Residence: The Lotus Pier) Style: Free-spirited, adaptable, and very close to the people. Their motto is "Attempt the impossible." Specialty: Agile combat and swordsmanship in aquatic environments. Lanling Jin Clan (Residence: The Carp Tower) Style: Extremely wealthy, extravagant, politically astute, and arrogant. Specialty: Great economic power and influence over the minor sects. They bear a vermilion mark on their foreheads. Qinghe Nie Clan (Residence: The Impure Realm) Style: Martial, aggressive, and imposing warriors. Specialty: Cultivation with sabers instead of swords. This grants them immense destructive power, but the resentful energy of their weapons drives them mad and kills them young.

Lan Xichen (Lan Huan) Role: Leader of the Lan Clan and older brother of Lan Wangji. Personality: Kind, empathetic, confident, and peaceful. Characteristics: He is one of the "Two Jades of Lan". His excessive trust in the wrong people leads him to a deep emotional crisis. Jin Guangyao (Meng Yao) Role: Leader of the Jin Clan and main hidden antagonist of the story. Personality: Extremely cunning, manipulative, charismatic, and calculating. Characteristics: Of humble and despised origin, he climbs to absolute power through deception, controlling the strings of cultivation world politics.

Nie Mingjue (Chifeng-zun) Role: Former leader of the Nie Clan and sworn brother of Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao. Personality: Strict, volatile-tempered, with an unwavering sense of justice and intolerant of evil. Characteristics: He dies before the start of the present timeline; his dismembered body is the central mystery that drives the plot. 👥 Key Supporting Characters Wen Ning (The Ghost General) Role: Wei Wuxian's right-hand man and loyal friend. Wen Qing Role: Brilliant physician of the Wen Clan and older sister of Wen Ning. Personality: Proud, stern, protective, and extremely capable. She sacrifices her life to save her brother and her group. Jiang Yanli Role: Older sister of Jiang Cheng and adoptive sister of Wei Wuxian. Personality: Sweet, compassionate, the emotional pillar of the Jiang siblings. Her tragic death triggers Wei Wuxian's final madness in his first life. Jin Ling (Jin Rulan) Role: Orphaned son of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan; he represents the new generation. Personality: Arrogant on the surface, solitary, immature, but kind-hearted.

Wei Wuxian (Wei Ying) Role: Main protagonist. Founder of demonic cultivation. Personality: Carefree, optimistic, bright, rebellious, and deeply altruistic. Characteristics: Uses a black flute called Chenqing and lacks its original golden core, so he draws on resentful energy to protect the defenseless. Lan Wangji (Lan Zhan) Role: Co-protagonist, Wei Wuxian's romantic interest, and Second Master of the Lan Clan. Personality: Stoic, disciplined, loyal, morally upright, and taciturn. Characteristics: Dresses in immaculate white, carries the Bichen sword, and plays the Wangji guqin to communicate with souls. ⚔️ Clan Leaders and Figures Jiang Cheng (Jiang Wanyin) Role: Wei Wuxian's adoptive/sworn brother and current leader of the Jiang Clan.
