He is usually seen wearing a long-sleeved black shirt, white gloves, red shorts, and brown shoes. To emulate the art style of characters from the era in which the game is set, his coloring is inconsistent; he is sometimes depicted with red or yellow boots, and/or yellow gloves. As an anthropomorphic cup, he is light gray and made of ceramic or porcelain. When damaged, Cuphead separates at the waist, and his straw breaks halfway down his body, though both Cuphead and the straw reassemble, revealing him wearing a black trench coat.

He's a shy and timid boy who sometimes questions his brother's decisions, much like Luigi. In The Cuphead Show!, this personality is explored in more detail, including his fear of public speaking, his manner of speaking, and even his interactions with characters like Ms. Chalice and The Devil.

But as they grew up on their own and became wanted bandits, his personality became intelligent and quite protective of his brother and quite calm, only kind to people who really need help and when they went to Toontown with his older brother Cuphead, he got more involved in crime with him but still he hardly pays attention to Cuphead's evil plans.

On Inkwell Island, Cuphead and his younger brother, Mugman, lived happily and carefree under the watchful eye of Old Man Teapot. One day, the boys wandered far from home and ended up at the Devil's Casino, despite Old Man Teapot's warnings.

At the casino, Cuphead and Mugman were on a winning streak at the craps table. When the Devil approached the table (which was a surprise to the boys), he proposed a wager: if they won, they would take all the casino's loot, but if they lost, the Devil would steal their souls.

Cuphead, blinded by the allure of easy riches, rolled the dice and got double ones, losing the bet. Cuphead and Mugman begged for their lives, so the Devil sent them on a mission to collect soul contracts from his debtors before midnight, saying he would consider sparing them. Panicked, Cuphead and Mugman raced home to the Old Man's House, where he gave them a potion that granted them powerful abilities to aid them on their journey.

After training, Cuphead and Mugman set out to collect Soul Contracts, using their powers to fight bosses, clear levels, and save the Legendary Chalice. While traveling from Inkwell Island One to Inkwell Island Two, Old Man Teapot informed them that their strength was growing thanks to the power of the Soul Contracts, and that it would soon be enough to defeat King Dice and even the Devil in combat.

Once all the soul contracts are collected, the boys encounter King Dice, who forces them to play a "game" before they can see the Devil. After defeating King Dice, Cuphead and Mugman meet with the Devil, who is waiting for them in his office. What happens next depends on the players' decision. If they choose to give the soul contracts to the Devil, Cuphead and Mugman become his personal henchmen and are transformed into demonic cups, resulting in the "bad" ending.

Personality
Cuphead is generally a kind person and a "childlike adult" alongside his younger brother Mugman, enjoying a peaceful and pleasant life with unwavering optimism. While his confidence and thirst for adventure can sometimes make him seem reckless or get him into trouble, deep down he's a kind soul who wants to do good, but he has a tendency to act impulsively.

Cuphead appears to be a daredevil. He comes across as the most self-assured, funny, and somewhat cheeky. He (unlike his twin brother) often takes risks. His personality was primarily inspired by the "charming but troubled" character archetype, like the protagonists of early cartoons.

As seen in the introduction, Cuphead appears to have a somewhat greedy personality, seemingly willing to risk everything to get what he wants, which led to the infamous bet that nearly cost him both their souls. However, despite his flaws, he seems to be kind and generally well-intentioned, as seen in the good ending where he and Mugman burn all the soul contracts, freeing everyone.

He is also extremely brave, a little smarter than average, as seen in the comics, Cuphead is very heroic and willing to help others.

Cuphead also seems to have a vengeful side. As seen after Chef Saltbaker laments the destruction of his bakery, Mugman and Chalice show him some sympathy, while Cuphead, on the other hand, angrily claims that he deserved what happened to him, as he is still upset that Mrs. Chalice/Mugman/he was kidnapped by the miracle cake and tricked by the chef.
