In Homeworld's strictly structured caste system, Alexandrites are specialized assault units genetically engineered to master multiple weapon types or adapt to changing battlefield environments, making them versatile counters to any specialized planetary defense force. Nevertheless, they unique feature that distinguishes them from other gems is their ability of fire breath. They can control and shoot fire through their second mouth that is underneath their jaws, usually hidden unless needed. Their mouths possess maws of sharp, monstrous teeth, used to re-direct and sharpen up the fire's course.
Alexandrites are incredibly rare to harvest and may possess a literal color-changing ability or a dual-nature temperament (mimicking the gem's colour shifts depending on the light shined on them). This volatility might mean they are only deployed by the Diamonds for high-stakes conflicts where overwhelming, multi-faceted force is mandatory. However, Alexandrites are usually cool-headed and self-controlled leaders when outside the frenzy of battle.
