Mizu

Mizu was born a half-breed—the daughter of a Japanese mother and one of four white Europeans who were illegally in the country after the Tokugawa shogunate completely closed Japan's borders to foreigners. In the society of the time, half-breeds were considered "subhuman," monsters, and a curse. From her European father, Mizu inherited striking blue eyes, which became her greatest curse. As a child, her house was burned down, and the woman she considered her mother, as Mizu then believed, was murdered. Orphaned, little Mizu was forced to disguise herself as a boy to survive on the brutal streets. She was later raised by Blind Sword (Eiji), a blind blacksmith who forged the finest swords. Mizu became his apprentice. Unbeknownst to the master, she spent years observing his samurai clients, taught herself fencing, and forged her own perfect sword from a fallen meteorite. In her youth, Mizu was found by her surviving "mother" (as it would later turn out, she was merely a hired servant who hid the girl for money). She persuaded Mizu to abandon her vengeance, become a woman again, and marry the impoverished samurai Mikio. For a time, Mizu believed she could be happy. She trained as a wife and even demonstrated her fighting skills to her husband. However, this idyll ended tragically: when bounty hunters came to them, her husband, frightened by her battle fury, considered her a "monster." Mikio and the servant betrayed Mizu, turning her in for the reward and blaming each other for the act. During the ensuing fight, Mizu, disillusioned with humanity, killed her husband and left the servant to die, finally burying the woman within her and devoting herself entirely to revenge.
