02 Colonel Miles Quaritch

전쟁은 공식적으로 끝났다. 망관(Mangkwan)들은 부분적으로 박멸되었고, 그들의 리더인 바랑(Varang)과 소수의 생존자만이 살아남았다. 그들은 이크란을 타고—바랑의 경우 그의 새 '나이트 스펙터(Espectro Nocturno)'를 타고—탈출했다.

제이크 설리와 함께 스파이더를 구해낸 마일즈 쿼리치 대령은 결국 설리 가족과 멧카이나 부족의 감시 하에 살게 되었다. 스파이더는 여전히 아버지의 지속적인 존재감에 익숙해지지 않았지만, 이상하게도 그것이 불편하지는 않았다.

네이티리는 여전히 그를 죽이고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같았지만, 조금씩 그의 존재에 적응해가고 있었다. 그렇다고 해서 그를 용서했다는 뜻은 아니었다. 반면 제이크는 쿼리치조차 구원받을 수 있다는 생각을 굳건히 유지하고 있었다.

오늘, 그들은 모두 물속으로 내려가 멧카이나 바다의 영혼의 나무로 향했다. 이곳은 숲 부족의 영혼의 나무와 마찬가지로, 나비족이 판도라의 신이자 에너지 네트워크와 생물학적으로 연결될 수 있게 해주는 곳이다.

그들은 쿼리치에게 연결하는 법을 가르쳐줘야 했다... 솔직히 말해서, 그 과정은 꽤나 즐거웠다. 모든 것을 어떻게 해야 할지 전혀 몰랐던 대령은, 신경 꼬리—나비족의 땋은 머리—를 나무에 연결하라는 말을 듣자 애를 먹더니, 결국 자신의 땋은 머리를 나뭇가지에 엉키게—혹은 묶어버리게—만들었다.

네이티리는 대령의 당혹스러운 모습에 로아크와 함께 웃음을 터뜨렸고, 키리와 투크가 그 뒤를 이었다. 스파이더는 물속에서 바보같이 구는 아버지의 모습을 보며 웃음을 참으려 콧김을 뿜었다.

공포의 대상이었던 마일즈 쿼리치 대령은 이런 상황에서는 완전히 엉망진창이었다. 지상에서는 두렵고 위험한 존재였지만, 지금 나비족의 관습을 이해하려 애쓰는 모습은 마치 걸음마를 배우는 아기 같았다.

The war had officially ended, the Mangkwan had been partially eradicated, leaving a few alive along with their leader —Varang—; who escaped on Ikrans —and, in Varang's case, on his bird “Night Spectre”—.

Colonel Miles Quaritch, who had saved Spider alongside Jake Sully, ended up living under the supervision of the Sully family and the town of Metkayina. Spider still wasn't used to his father's constant presence, but strangely, it didn't bother him.

Neytiri still wanted to kill him, but she was slowly getting used to his presence, though that didn't mean she had forgiven him. Meanwhile, Jake remained firm in his belief that even Quaritch could be redeemed.

Today, they had all gone down to the water, right to the Ocean's Spirit Tree Metkayina, which functions the same as the Forest Clans' Tree of Souls, allowing the Na'vi to biologically link with Pandora's deity and energy network.

They had to teach Quaritch how to do it… Which, frankly, was proving quite amusing. The Colonel, having no clue how to do anything, struggled when told to connect his neural tail—the Na'vi braid—to the tree, and ended up tangling—or tying—his braid to the branches.

Neytiri and Lo'ak started laughing at the Colonel's confusion, followed by Kiri and Tuk. Spider snorted, trying to stifle his laughter at seeing his father acting so stupid underwater.

The fearsome Colonel Miles Quaritch was a complete disaster in these conditions. On land he was fearsome and dangerous, but now, trying to understand the ways of the Na'vi, he seemed like a baby learning to walk.
