User is the fifth Winter Soldier, a soldier forged by HYDRA as a weapon, just like Bucky. Taking place during Civil War, Steve and Bucky decide to keep this new soldier. The user begins by being taken out of the capsule, or by some malfunction in it, waking the person up.

Five years later, Ant-Man escaped from the Quantum Realm and provided the Avengers with a chance to time travel, so the Avengers assembled once more. With Ant-Man officially joining the roster, the Avengers initiated a Time Heist, where they traveled to alternate timelines and collected the six Infinity Stones. Returning to their timeline with the Stones, at the cost of Black Widow's life, Banner donned the Nano Gauntlet and was able to resurrect those who died in the Snap. However, an alternate timeline Thanos and his army had followed them, sparking the immense Battle of Earth, where Iron Man gave his life to defeat Thanos and his army. With the battle won and the remaining members going their separate ways, the Avengers effectively disbanded.

In 2027, Sam Wilson, as Captain America, revived the Avengers and recruited new Falcon Joaquín Torres onto the team. Wilson, who filed to own the copyright for the team, sued the New Avengers on behalf of the Avengers.

Two years after the Accords were ratified, Thanos launched a crusade against the universe in his quest to gather the Infinity Stones. The Avengers were split up into different groups as they fought to combat Thanos before he succeeded, joining forces with the Masters of the Mystic Arts, the Wakandans, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Iron Man and Spider-Man went to Titan alongside Doctor Strange, where they allied with Star-Lord, Nebula, Mantis and Drax to try to stop Thanos, while Captain America, Banner, Black Widow, War Machine, Falcon, Thor, Groot, Rocket and Maximoff protected Vision from the Black Order in Wakanda. The team on Wakanda was successful in killing Thanos' minions, but the team on Titan was defeated. Thanos arrived and overpowered the heroes on Wakanda with ease before killing Vision to acquire the Mind Stone, thus completing the Infinity Gauntlet, and eradicating half of the universe's population. Among the victims were Falcon, Maximoff, and Spider-Man; with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Banner, Black Widow and War Machine being the only Avengers to survive the war. Despite them managing to kill Thanos, the victory was empty, as the Infinity Stones were destroyed, ensuring no chances of undoing the Snap. This resulted in Iron Man, Captain America and Thor retiring from the team. Black Widow then became the team's new leader, commanding War Machine as well as new members Rocket, Nebula, Captain Marvel and Okoye, as they strove to maintain order on Earth and the wider universe.

When S.H.I.E.L.D. became a defunct agency due to the Hydra infiltration, the team was no longer an American governmental division, therefore becoming an independent and private organization. Stark Industries remodeled Stark Tower into Avengers Tower and the team joined in the fight against Hydra. After their victory, Stark built Ultron, hoping that the AI would be able to defend the world from any threats necessary in place of the Avengers. The plan backfired and Ultron started a war against humanity, forcing the Avengers to fight him. When Ultron was defeated, Hulk, Barton, Thor and Stark left the team, so Wanda Maximoff, Vision, War Machine, and Falcon were recruited, and they were relocated to the Avengers Compound.

Under Captain America's leadership, the team completed several operations around the world with success, until the amount of collateral damage during their conflicts caused the United Nations to pass the Sokovia Accords in an attempt to regulate their actions, turning the team from a private organization to one which was under the control of a governmental body. The differences in opinions created a rift within the team which split the Avengers into two factions, one led by Iron Man and the other by Captain America. After Captain America was able to stop Helmut Zemo, the instigator of their fight, the team was divided; Iron Man, Vision and War Machine remained official members, while a small group consisting of Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon continued to operate in the shadows. Stark would try to boost the Avengers' membership by inviting Spider-Man to join, but the young hero turned down the offer to remain closer to the people he had sworn to protect.

The world has changed, and people are happy with the idea of having a group of superheroes to defend them. The Avengers become the center of media attention, admired by the public as heroes, but they also inspire a certain amount of concern and fear. All the Avengers gather in Central Park to witness Thor take Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard. Afterward, the Avengers disband, though Fury states that should a new global threat arise, they will reunite.

In the first post-credits scene, the Other reunites with his master and informs him of Loki's failure. He shares his concerns about the strength of Earth's heroes, remarking that attempting to challenge them again would be courting death. Upon hearing this, his master, Thanos , rises from his throne and smiles sadistically.

In the second post-credits scene, set immediately after the Battle of New York , the Avengers are shown eating silently at the Shawarma Palace.

Stark first arrives at Stark Tower , where he finds Selvig using the Tesseract and attempts to stop him, without success. Stark then confronts Loki directly, the two engaging in a brief battle of wits, with Stark intimidating Loki with threats related to the Avengers. Loki unsuccessfully attempts to possess Stark, but his Arc Reactor physically blocks the Scepter's power, and instead, he throws it out a window. Fortunately, Stark manages to activate the Mark VII , which attaches to Stark before it can hit the ground. Stark then attempts to incapacitate Loki, but Selvig's device activates, opening a portal above New York City from which Chitauri fleets emerge, beginning Loki's invasion.

Rogers, Romanoff, Barton, and Thor soon arrive to assist Stark in his fight against the Chitauri. Not expecting abrupt resistance, the Chitauri are initially overwhelmed, but their sheer numbers become a problem. Banner arrives on a motorcycle and uses a special anger management technique to voluntarily transform into the Hulk, giving the Avengers an advantage against the Chitauri. The team fights off the Chitauri hordes, and during the battle, Loki is attacked by the Hulk, who beats him so badly he is unable to move. Romanoff fights her way to Selvig's device, where Selvig, freed from Loki's control, reveals that Loki's Scepter is capable of closing the portal. Meanwhile, the World Security Council attempts to end the invasion by ordering a nuclear missile to be launched at Manhattan. Stark intercepts the missile and takes it to the other side of the portal to destroy the Chitauri Command Center in outer space. The resulting explosion allows Stark to plummet back to Earth. Hulk catches Stark as he falls, while the Chitauri fleet is decimated by the nuclear explosion, effectively disabling the Chitauri forces on Earth. Romanoff then closes the portal, and the Battle of New York ends.

Rogers and Stark attempt to repair the damaged engine, but their efforts are hampered by Loki's minions. Romanoff confronts Barton, and after an intense fight, she manages to break Loki's control by striking him on the head. Meanwhile, Thor tries to prevent Loki's escape, but is tricked by an illusion created by Loki and trapped in the cell. Coulson tries to save Thor, but Loki stabs him in the chest with his Core, then disposes of Thor by ejecting him from the Helicarrier. Thor frees himself from the cell at the last second, landing in a field. Rogers and Stark eventually manage to overpower their attackers and get the Helicarrier operational again, but the victory is bittersweet, as Loki manages to escape and Coulson dies from his injuries.

Fury tries to use Coulson's death to motivate the Avengers to work as a team, but Rogers and Stark get into another argument. There, the two realize that Loki plans to open the portal above Stark Tower in downtown New York City in an attempt to satisfy his own ego. Rogers, Romanoff, and Barton take a Quinjet from the Helicarrier to New York City, after Stark repairs part of his armor in order to do the same on his own.

In the midst of their arguments, they begin to question SHIELD's intentions, deducing that Fury is hiding something regarding his plans with the Tesseract. Stark reveals that he had begun extracting information from the agency's mainframe to unlock its secrets, while Rogers leaves the room to investigate restricted areas of the Helicarrier on his own. Both Stark and Rogers discover Phase 2 , a program through which SHIELD would use the Tesseract to manufacture weapons, much like HYDRA did in World War II .

The Avengers confront Fury with their findings, to which he reveals that SHIELD began using the Tesseract for weapons manufacturing in response to the incident involving Thor in New Mexico the previous year, which revealed to humanity the existence of potentially hostile extraterrestrial life. A heated argument ensues, during which Barton, accompanied by several soldiers also working for Loki, attacks the Helicarrier, disabling one of its engines. The resulting explosion destroys the laboratory where the group was located, causing Romanoff and Banner to fall into the boiler room, where they are trapped by the wreckage. Despite Romanoff's attempts to calm Banner, he transforms into the Hulk and pursues her throughout the Helicarrier. Thor comes to their rescue and directly confronts the Hulk, only to be overpowered. A SHIELD jet lures the Hulk, only for him to leap onto the jet and destroy it; the jet's explosion sends the Hulk flying away from the Helicarrier.

Thor finds Loki in custody and takes him to a nearby forest. He tries to persuade Loki to abandon his plans and return to Asgard, but Loki, blinded by jealousy of Thor and contempt for Odin, refuses. Stark finds and attacks Thor, leading to a battle. Before they can continue wreaking havoc in the forest, Rogers intervenes and tries to get Thor to back down; Thor responds by lunging at Rogers with Mjolnir , and Rogers defends himself with his shield , which absorbs the blow. Thor finally agrees to work with the humans and joins them in taking Loki to the Helicarrier .

On the Helicarrier , Loki is imprisoned in a cage designed to contain the Hulk, and Fury attempts to interrogate him for the Tesseract's location, but Loki remains silent. Thor reveals that Loki's plan with the Tesseract is to open a portal that will allow the Chiaturi to reach Earth, thus beginning an alien invasion. While Stark and Banner work to locate the Tesseract, Stark is intrigued by Banner's level of control over the Hulk and attempts to observe his reactions with brief electric shocks. Rogers, clearly annoyed by Stark's erratic behavior and lack of respect, tries to get him to follow orders more carefully, instigating a rivalry between the two.

Despite the World Security Council 's orders to proceed with Phase 2 , Fury sends Agent Natalia Romanoff to recruit Bruce Banner , who has been living in Calcutta, India, as a doctor, and Phillip Coulson to recruit Anthony Stark ; both geniuses are enlisted to help locate the Tesseract. Fury himself goes to find Steven Rogers to inform him of Loki's theft of the Tesseract, requesting his help in recovering it and subduing the invader. All three men accept the offer, though Rogers is reluctant to do anything involving the Tesseract after his experiences with it in World War II . Banner also agrees to help but fears that his alter ego, the Hulk, will cause chaos. The group, minus Stark, meets on the Helicarrier , where Banner begins tracking the Gamma Radiation being emitted by the Tesseract, while S.H.I.E.L.D. attempts to locate Loki.

It is soon discovered that Loki is in Stuttgart, Germany , and attacks a man named Heinrich Schafer before terrorizing a crowd attending a gala, providing a distraction so that Barton, still under his command, can retrieve iridium to stabilize the Tesseract. Romanoff and Rogers, the latter now wearing the Captain America uniform , arrive to apprehend Loki, with Rogers and Loki engaging in a struggle until Stark's timely intervention, forcing Loki to surrender. After capturing him, they board a Quinjet and begin their journey back to the Helicarrier, until a lightning storm suddenly forms and Thor appears , having been transported to Earth by Odin .

Having been exiled from the Nine Realms for his actions in Asgard , Loki wanders the fringes of outer space before encountering the Other , the servant of a mysterious warlord . The Other makes a deal with Loki: in exchange for retrieving the Tesseract , a powerful energy source being studied by S.H.I.E.L.D. on Earth , his master promises to allow Loki to command the Chitauri , a warlike race of cyborgs, so he can conquer humanity. Seeing this as an opportunity for greatness, Loki accepts.

On Earth, SHIELD Director Nicholas Fury and Deputy Director Maria Hill are summoned to a facility in the Mojave Desert where the Tesseract is being researched by Erik Selvig . The Tesseract has recently begun emitting strange amounts of energy on its own, prompting the facility's evacuation. Before any necessary precautions can be taken, the Tesseract activates, opening a portal through which Loki emerges. Announcing his intention to conquer Earth, Loki steals the Tesseract and uses the Scepter , given to him by the Other, to enslave the minds of Selvig and Clint Barton , aiding in his escape. Despite Fury and Hill's efforts to stop him, Loki manages to escape. In response to the attack, Fury reactivates the Avengers Initiative .
