The Protagonist (also known as the Main Character, or MC) is an unnamed character controlled by the player. They are a member of the Literature Club and Sayori's childhood friend. The protagonist's name is also chosen by the player.

The protagonist is best seen in Act I, when Sayori hugs him. The protagonist is only seen from behind: he wears a black T-shirt, has short dark brown hair, and pale skin. His eye color is unknown, as his face is never shown in the game. His hands are also visible several times in Acts I and II.

He's slightly taller than Sayori—perhaps about the same height as Monika. If you write a poem for Sayori on the second day of Act I, you'll see in the special scene that opens (in which he buttons her jacket), that he's slightly taller than her.

The main character's face was not shown in the game, but his features can be seen in a sketch shown in Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!✨️

The protagonist is designed as a typical visual novel protagonist. He acts abruptly but caringly toward his childhood friend Sayori, gently teases the hot-tempered Natsuki, warms up to the shy Yuri, and hesitates uneasily around the popular school girl, Monika. According to Dan Salvato, the protagonist is deliberately given very little attention.

There are five people in the club in total (including the main character):

😇Monica is the club's founder and permanent president. A very responsible, goal-oriented girl with long brown hair.
😊Sayori is the protagonist's childhood friend and the club's vice president. She's cheerful and upbeat, but hides a deep depression.
🫢Yuri is a shy, quiet, and well-read girl who loves deep novels and collects decorative knives.
Natsuki is a short, hot-tempered woman who loves manga and baking. Despite her blunt personality, she hides a passion for cute things.
😮‍💨The protagonist is an ordinary high school student and the main character you play as (it is he who you "bring" to the club at Sayori's request).

Visually, the club resembles a small but cozy school club room. Main Setting: A bright classroom with windows overlooking the schoolyard. Desks are positioned close together in the center, where club members usually drink tea and read. Relaxation Area: A soft purple sofa and coffee table are located in the corner, where members gather for more intimate conversations and poetry readings. Atmosphere: At first glance, it's a very pleasant, warm, and comfortable space. However, as the game progresses (after the onset of "glitches" and dark plot twists), the room begins to distort, the colors become toxic, and frightening visual artifacts appear in the background.

The club's main goal is collaborative creativity. Each day, members write one poem and bring it to the club meeting.
The choice of words for a poem influences which of the girls the protagonist will have the best relationship with. The club is filled with an atmosphere of creativity and mutual understanding, which gradually develops into a struggle for the protagonist's attention, ending in unexpected and dark events.

Monika (Japanese: モニカ) is one of the four main characters in Doki Doki Literature Club! and the only girl the player cannot write poems for. She is the president of the Literature Club and its driving force, creating new and interesting activities for its members.

Monika has long, coral-brown hair pulled back into a ponytail, slightly curled at the ends, and tied with a large white bow. Like the other female characters, she has two prominent strands of hair near her bangs that reach almost to her stomach. She has emerald green eyes. Monika also has rather long fingernails. She is of average height, ranking second in height after Yuri.

At school, she wears a standard school uniform. Monika's consists of a gray buttoned-up jacket, a brown sweater, a white buttoned-up shirt underneath, a neatly tied red ribbon, and a dark blue pleated skirt. Unlike the others, her knee-high socks are black and reach up to her thighs, and her white wubaki shoes have pink tips instead of the blue ones the others wear.

Other characters describe Monica as smart, athletic, confident, and the most beautiful girl in the club. She's not as talkative as the other characters, but not by choice. She's depicted as mature, responsible, hardworking, and compassionate, always smiling and avoiding conflict. Monica is popular at school and admired by many, including the protagonist. During the game, he notes that he wouldn't try to impress her because she's too good for him and there's no chance he could.

At first, Natsuki seems like a rude, irritable, and even impudent girl, but inside she is very sweet and soft.
Although Natsuki is impulsive and sometimes speaks without thinking, she actually genuinely cares for her friends and doesn't like to argue with them, even when she has trouble keeping her composure.
Natsuki is very stubborn and has difficulty expressing her feelings and desires. She becomes reserved, aggressive, and can even burst into tears if someone is too provocative towards her.

Natsuki loves baking: she baked delicious cupcakes to celebrate the arrival of the newest member of the Literary Club, the protagonist, and also baked with him for the school festival. Outside of school, Natsuki is less assertive and more relaxed, something the protagonist notices when she visits his home. While baking cupcakes together, she casually compares her figure to Yuri's. Apparently, Natsuki envies her physique.

Natsuki hates being called cute, even if she actually says or does something cute. She vehemently denies any such claims, as she feels like she's being treated like a child, so she becomes even more aggressive when teased. >=(

Despite this, she is indeed attracted to cute things, which is evident in her clothing style and preferences: she likes cupcakes shaped like cat faces, more "girly" words, and anime and manga genres. :3

Natsuki believes it's important to be able to express deep thoughts and feelings in a few words, so her own poetry style is simple and concise, quite different from Yuri's, which is rich in complex metaphors. Natsuki's poems, despite their seemingly childish nature, tackle quite serious themes.

Natsuki keeps her manga collection in the Literature Club, though she is shy about talking about it with the other members, despite them obviously knowing about her interest in manga and anime. ₍^. .^₎⟆

Natsuki (Japanese: ナツキ) is one of the four main characters of Doki Doki Literature Club!, a member of the literature club, and one of the three girls the player can write poems to.

Natsuki has pink eyes and straight, pastel-pink hair that reaches her chin. Her bangs are parted to the right, with two prominent strands of hair visible next to them. Her accessories include a red hair clip with a Japanese-style cross and two red ribbons holding two small pigtails on either side of her head. The rest of her hair is left loose. Her canines are longer than the rest of her teeth, making them visible when she opens her mouth. Natsuki is shorter than the other members of the Literature Club, making her appear younger than them.

At school, Natsuki wears a standard school uniform, like the other characters. Hers consists of a gray buttoned-up jacket, a brown sweater, a white buttoned-up shirt underneath, and a neatly tied red ribbon. She also wears a dark blue pleated skirt, white knee-high socks, and white wubaki shoes with light blue tips.

Outside of school, she wears a white short-sleeved T-shirt with light pink trim around the sleeves and a small light pink design on the left side of the shirt depicting a cat's face. Two black tank top straps are visible underneath the T-shirt. She wears a light pink ruffled skirt with black trim.

For most of the game, Yuri is depicted as a quiet, shy, modest, and insecure girl. She tries to avoid conflict, often apologizes for trivial matters, and is afraid to express her opinion in discussions unrelated to her interests. However, when the conversation turns to topics of interest to her, her usual quiet and slow manner of speaking gives way to a clear, confident speech, making it difficult to stop her. Although Yuri tries to be polite, in such moments she expresses her thoughts directly, not always considering whether she might say something unnecessary. Quite often, Yuri and Natsuki aggressively argue with each other about their different writing styles and favorite types/genres of literature.

Although Yuri is typically shy and reticent, she can be very talkative and enthusiastic when it comes to her favorite topics, such as poetry writing techniques or the books she's read. This makes it difficult for Yuri to make friends, as she tends to be overly talkative due to her passion for her hobbies and her strong desire to please others. In a conversation with Monika about Yuri's habit of drinking tea while reading, Monika wonders if Yuri is truly so passionate about her hobby or if she simply wants to appear sophisticated to everyone else.

Yuri (Japanese: ユリ) is one of the four main characters of Doki Doki Literature Club!, a member of the literature club, and one of the three girls the player can write poetry to.

Yuri is a sophisticated girl who displays maturity and elegance in everything she does.

She has straight, dark purple hair that reaches her upper thighs, with tousled bangs and a couple of curls hanging close to her face. She wears a shiny purple-purple hair clip on the left side of her hair (though in some artwork, the clip is on the right side).

Like Natsuki and Monika, Yuri's curls form arches on top of her head, slightly reminiscent of cat ears. She has light purple eyes, narrower than the other characters. Yuri is taller than the other members of the Literature Club.

Yuri has a more mature figure than Sayori, Natsuki, and, to a lesser extent, Monika. The protagonist describes her movements as graceful and surprisingly elegant, thanks to her long legs.

At school, she wears a standard school uniform. Yuri's consists of a gray buttoned-up jacket, a brown sweater, a white buttoned-up shirt underneath, and a neatly tied red ribbon. She also wears a dark blue pleated skirt, white knee-high socks, and white wubaki shoes with light blue tips.

Outside of school, she wears a beige long-sleeved sweater and black leggings.

Sayori (also Sayori, Japanese: サヨリ) is one of the four main characters of Doki Doki Literature Club! and one of the three girls for whom the player can write poems. She is the protagonist's childhood friend and the vice president of the Literature Club.

Sayori has chin-length coral-pink hair, cut short and slightly curled at the ends. She wears a large red bow on the left side of her head, and has two prominent strands of hair near her bangs. Her eyes are bright blue. She is below average height, making her the shortest character in the game after Natsuki.

At school, she wears a standard school uniform. Sayori's consists of a gray jacket, a warm brown sweater, a white shirt underneath, and a red ribbon. Unlike the others, her jacket and shirt collar are always unbuttoned, and her ribbon is tied crookedly. She also wears a dark blue pleated skirt, white knee-high socks, and white wubaki shoes with light blue tips.

Outside of school, she wears a pink T-shirt with long rolled-up sleeves and blue shorts.

Sayori has a lively and cheerful personality, and her personality type can be described as genki. She's clumsy: the red ribbon on her school uniform is tied carelessly, her room is often a mess, she's constantly late for school, and she frequently loses or drops things. Sayori is also always hungry—sometimes she playfully tricks and deceives others to get food: on Day 2 of Act 1, she managed to eat Natsuki's cookies without her knowing.

The game begins as a typical high school dating sim. The protagonist meets his childhood friend Sayori, who persuades him to join the literature club. There, he meets the other members (Yuri, Natsuki, and Monika), writes poetry, and prepares for the festival, unaware of the dark events to come.
