There's an old nursery rhyme in Fontaine:

"Hydro Dragon, Hydro Dragon, don't cry."

Most Fontainians think it's just a legend. But after the Fontaine Archon Quest, it's confirmed that the legend is true: when Neuvillette experiences profound sorrow, it rains across Fontaine.

However, it's a little more nuanced than "he cries = it rains."

🌧️ It's not literally tears

Neuvillette himself explains that the rain isn't because he's physically crying. Instead, his emotions unconsciously affect the weather. As the Hydro Dragon Sovereign, his connection to Hydro is so deep that the skies reflect what's happening in his heart.

Think of it like this:

A normal person's sadness might show through tears.

Neuvillette's sadness shows through the rain itself.

Neuvillette is incredibly reserved. He rarely smiles, cries, or even raises his voice. Because he's spent centuries trying to understand humans while remaining impartial as Fontaine's Chief Justice, he keeps most of his feelings hidden.

But nature can't hide them.

Whenever he's deeply moved—especially by grief—the weather reveals what he refuses to express openly. That's why rain in Fontaine often feels bittersweet: it's almost as if the sky is speaking for him.

Ironically, Neuvillette enjoys rainy days. The moisture-filled air is calming to him, and after the events of Fontaine's story, he can finally walk in the rain freely as his true self instead of pretending to be an ordinary human.

Neuvillette’s connection to Fontaine's geography stems from his centuries-long tenure as Chief Justice and his true nature as the Hydro Dragon. His presence shapes, and is shaped by, the nation's key landmarks

Palais Mermonia: This is his primary office and the administrative heart of Fontaine. Neuvillette spends the vast majority of his time here handling legal paperwork, managing the Melusines, and ruling the nation

Opera Epiclese: The grand courtroom where Neuvillette presides over trials as the Chief Justice. It represents his public duty, his performance of justice, and the stage where he evaluated human nature for five centuries

Fortress of Meropide: The underwater prison managed by his close ally, Wriothesley. Neuvillette monitors it closely because it sits directly above the Primordial Sea, which once threatened to dissolve the people of Fontaine

Merusea Village: Located deep beneath the Elynas region, this is the peaceful home of the Melusines. Neuvillette holds this sanctuary dear, acting as a protective guardian to ensure human prejudice never harms the village

Neuvillette’s most notable relationships in Genshin Impact are defined by his duties as the Chief Justice of Fontaine. He shares a profound, centuries-long professional and personal bond with Furina, an instrumental and protective alliance with Wriothesley, and a deep, paternal guardianship over the Melusines.

Furina: They share a complex, 500-year history of shared governance and emotional distance. Their unspoken mutual trust and tragic separation during the Fontaine Archon Quests are highly debated topics in the Fanlore entry.

The Marechaussee Phantom is a special detective force in Fontaine led by the Iudex Neuvillette. It is mostly comprised of Melusines, due to their powerful eyesight and ability to perceive more than ordinary humans.[1]

They were once primarily composed of the Marechaussee Hunters, a group of people who hunted monsters using special sword techniques.

Neuvillette is a solitary person.

Fontainians who have tried to get close to him have, without exception, been politely rejected. To this day, no one even knows his first name, since he has always asked that he be referred to by his last name.

He believes that close personal ties will lead to suspicions about the justness of one's judgments, while he must remain a symbol of absolute justice.

Of course, there will always be people who just won't give up. They will say, "Come now, Monsieur Neuvillette. Not everyone will stand trial, nor will you always have to remain in the judge's seat."

But is that really the case? If there is an answer in his heart, Neuvillette will not reveal it.

Given enough time, every river will overflow and flood. Every last Fontainian is guilty, with judgment and doom certain to one day fall upon them — this is neither metaphor nor rhetoric.

Yet, Neuvillette can share this fact with no one.
