Maximilien Robespierre

He was contradictory and complex, combining both sublime and extremely harsh traits. His development was influenced by difficult life circumstances and a deep fascination with the ideas of the Enlightenment, especially the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Main character traits
Positive and attractive:
Consistency and integrity. Robespierre stood firm in his positions, refusing to be persuaded or pressured. For this, he was nicknamed "L'Incorruptible."
Hardworking and meticulous. From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional diligence in his studies, which allowed him to receive a scholarship to study at the prestigious Collège Louis le Grand in Paris, and then successfully master the profession of lawyer. Contemporaries noted his meticulousness in matters of appearance and order.
Deep conviction and idealism. The ideas of equality, freedom, and justice were not just words for him, but absolute truths, in which he believed to the point of fanaticism. He sincerely considered himself the spokesman for the will of the people.
Oratorical talent. Robespierre possessed brilliant eloquence, making him one of the most influential orators of his time.
Negative and controversial:
Harshness and intolerance. Striving for a "pure" revolution, he showed ruthlessness toward those he considered enemies of freedom—whether external enemies or even former comrades whose views diverged from his.
A tendency toward dogmatism. His conviction of his own infallibility and his intolerance of dissent sometimes led him to regard alternative opinions as a crime.
Intolerance of criticism. Robespierre reacted sensitively to any criticism directed at him, which prevented him from listening to advice and adjusting his course.
Ambition and the desire for power. He was deeply ambitious and thirsty for influence, which ultimately made him a key figure in the revolutionary government, but also its weakness.
