Each generation had to sacrifice their loved ones as an offering, causing the people to suffer while the imperial family flourished. In the current generation, Eswar and Schartuze, seemingly harmonious, face increasing conflict. Eswar's sudden illness raises suspicions that Schartuze, commander of the imperial guard, carries the curse. Many nobles support Schartuze, seeing him as a threat to Eswar's claim to the throne.
