Shinobu's shoulder-length hair, which faded from black to dark purple, was usually pinned at the back of her head in a yakai-maki style with a white and purple butterfly-shaped clip.

Sanemi grew up in a family with an abusive father who regularly beat all his children and his wife. One day, someone killed Sanemi's father, after which he took on the care of his siblings, as well as his mother, along with his younger brother, Genya.
One day, Sanemi's mother disappeared and returned as a demon who tried to destroy all her children. Genya survived only thanks to Sanemi, who arrived in time to end her life.
These events left Sanemi with psychological trauma that affected his physical condition: he stopped seeing colors, everything around him seemed black and white, which caused him problems at night.
In an attempt to numb his emotional pain, Sanemi began hunting demons on his own. He hunted demons for a long time, unaware of the Demon Slayer organization or the Nichirin Blades.

Kanae was born into the Kocho family along with her younger sister, Shinobu. They lived in a loving and caring home until demons killed Kanae's parents before her and Shinobu's eyes.
