Absolute Immortality: Devils of "Primal Fear" status in general are considered unkillable due to their power, hence why they never undergo reincarnation.[42] The Death Devil herself, however, outright makes note that she simply cannot die, even if she wanted to.[14][46]
Supernatural Abilities

Resurrection: The Death Devil is able to bring back people from the dead, as seen when Yuko was killed by Asa's Uniform Sword and when she revived the Famine Devil and the Fake Chainsaw Man.[47]
Enhancing Healing: The Death Devil has been shown to have the ability to heal others, causing the healed person to gain great strength and size. This ability was used on Yuko after she was sliced to pieces by Asa Mitaka's weapon.[21]
Enslavement: The Death Devil is able to enslave those she has personally killed, typically through eating them alive, and this ability is shown to work even on a "Primal Fear" Devil.[48] It's also noteworthy, that unlike her sister Makima, Devils under her command tend to not be fully obedient, as shown with how Famine was able to punch her upon being initially summoned or how Guillotine refused to kill the Public Safety agents. While acting as the Famine Devil, the Death Devil concealed the true nature of her ability, claiming she was able to turn the "hungry" (飢えた者, uetamono?) into her "pawns" (駒, koma?) to do her bidding [49] and claimed that the Devils under her control cannot use their full strength and that her summoning has restrictions, promoting her to use this power sparingly.[50]
Falling Devil: One of the Devils that the Death Devil has successfully turned into pawns is one of the Devils that bares the title of "Primal Fear", the Falling Devil. The Death Devil seemed to enjoy total obedience from the Falling Devil despite her own immense power.
Fire Devil: Another one of the Devils she has managed to turn into a pawn is the Fire Devil, which gets stronger the more contracts it makes.

Abilities

The Death Devil is the strongest Devil in existence, her name being the most feared of all.[8]

Death herself possesses all the standard Devil abilities. While not fully awoken and not at full strength, she nonetheless demonstrates immense power over others. While their extent is still unclear, she seems to be able to influence the power of Devils in some way. Rather than being directly involved in conflicts, she prefers to utilize the powers of other Devils who are either cooperating with her voluntarily or under her direct control. She was able to separate Yoru from Asa temporarily but left Asa her power to turn people and objects into weapons and communicate with her at a distance despite Asa being trapped in another Devil's pocket dimension.

While lesser "Primal Fears" are already transcendent beings that cannot be killed and whose mere presence can be felt across the world,[42][43] the Death Devil's arrival is held as tantamount to the apocalypse. Indeed, the Prophecy of Nostradamus calls her "Ultimate Terror" and "Great King of Terror" — who is to usher in an Age of Devils and thus end the human race.[11][12][13] According to Yoru, once Death descends, the other high-ranking Devils, such as the Fire Devil, will pay court to her.[44]

However, her sisters seem to believe that killing Death is within the realms of possibility: Makima desired to kill all her sisters by having Chainsaw Man eat them,[28] and Death herself plots to empower the War and Chainsaw Devils by rapidly reigniting humanity's collective fear of them (by means of inciting a global war) so that both can grow strong enough to rival her.[12][13] Yoshida has reiterated this notion, stating that, while no country in the world has the means to prevent Death's descent, if War were to control Chainsaw Man as a mindless weapon, humanity may have a chance of surviving and perhaps even overcoming Death.[45]

She prefers lethal methods in combat, ordering the Guillotine Devil to hack her enemies to pieces and being disappointed when it only disarms them. However, she spares the likes of Haruka Iseumi after he denounces his loyalty to her, presumably because she doesn't find him worthy of her attention.[20]

Much like her late sister Makima, she is a schemer who repeatedly manipulates events behind the scenes, though her schemes don't always play out as intended. Currently, she is the secret leader of the Chainsaw Man Church, which she claimed to use to eradicate the devils in Tokyo to enable Denji to live a peaceful life and separate him from Pochita, whom the Death Devil claimed she would hand over to Yoru to kill. Despite Haruka being the face of said organization, Death refused to reveal to him the full extent of her plans and told him he didn't need to think. She tells different things to different people, even lying in order to convince them to cooperate with her.[18]

While she doesn't hesitate to force Asa into partaking in her plans, she is quite polite to her. The Death Devil also seems affectionate towards Yoru, saying that she would do anything for her "little sister".[21] At the same time, she isn't above trying to turn her sister into a pawn for her plans. Despite Death's affection for Yoru, the War Devil does not reciprocate those feelings and describes her as insane and someone from whom Asa should stay away.[22] The Death Devil wants Yoru to treat her like a sister and, therefore, only answers when Yoru addresses her in a more affectionate way.[23] As shown, it's implied that Death has a similar relationship with the other Four Horsemen, as seen when the current Control Devil calls her sister. Death also calls the Guillotine Devil by an affectionate nickname.
Death's demand to be addressed with affection also extends to others, as upon revealing her true nature to Denji, she asks to be called "Death(y)-chan" (in Japanese).

Personality

The Death Devil has a very mysterious personality and shows little outward emotion. She is always calm, cold, and composed and also seems to be very good at reading others, as she accurately describes both Asa's and Denji's characters.[15] Her knowledge seems greater than she initially leads on, as she possesses information that shouldn't be available to her.

Death doesn't necessarily seem to be as outwardly malicious as her brethren, even informing Public Safety officials such as Yoshida about more dangerous Devils, albeit after being threatened first.[16] Despite being intelligent, she can underestimate others, believing that Asa, like most people, would be willing to do anything to survive if forced to, which gets proven wrong.

The Death Devil is more than willing to sacrifice people for her goals. For example, she traps Asa and her fellow club members in an aquarium, knowing that they will starve and suffer, and tries to turn Yoru into a pawn of hers so she can use her as a weapon against the apocalypse.[15] To achieve the latter, she unleashes the Falling Devil on Earth, which not only causes high casualties and worldwide destruction but also ends up not working, making the deaths meaningless.[17][18] Later, the Death Devil also condemns hundreds of thousands of civilians to lose their minds under the influence of the Fire Devil so that her plans come to fruition.[19] She is shown feeling little to no remorse for the deaths around her if it means enacting her plans to prevent the prophecy, even sacrificing her younger sister Nayuta. The Death Devil also has a fairly defeatist attitude towards her part in The Prophecy, as, although she claims that her death will just lead to another, worse incarnation of the Death Devil to appear, she still orders her newly-enslaved sister and Fake Chainsaw Man to spread chaos among humanity.

Appearance

The Death Devil takes on the appearance of a young woman who wears a high school uniform and a black cap from the Devil Hunter Club. She has grayish-mountbatten pink-colored neck-length hair and has several moles on her face. Similar to the other Horsemen, she has piercing, multiple-ringed eyes. On her colored manga cover, her eyes are shown to be pink. Her ears feature four green earrings, two of which are beads on her right and the other two are unusually long and have a triangular shape at the end.

When her true identity is exposed, the Death Devil is shown to have a large, vertical incision running down the center of her torso and abdomen. This is the result of her failed attempt to end her own life by removing all of her vital organs, leaving her as a hollow corpse that continues to exist despite having an "empty" body.[14]

Fami (キガ, Kiga?) is the main antagonist of the Academy Saga. She is the Famine Devil ( 飢 き 餓 がの 悪 あく 魔 ま, Kiga no Akuma?) which embodies the fear of famine and starvation and is a member of the Four Horsemen.

Fami poses as a student at Fourth East High School and is the true leader of the Chainsaw Man Church. Her goal is to stop the Prophecy of Nostradamus, which would bring about the Age of Devils and the end of humanity.

The Death Devil ( 死 しの 悪 あく 魔 ま, Shi no Akuma?) is the main antagonist of the Academy Saga. She is the strongest Devil in existence, embodying the concept of death itself.[8] She is the eldest of the Four Horsemen, first mentioned by her younger sister Makima[9] and eventually appearing under the alias of the Famine Devil, Fami.[10] Soon after revealing herself to have been Death all along, "Fami" forgoes her false persona and adopts the name Li'l D ( 死 しーちゃん, Shī-chan?, lit. "Death(y)-chan") instead.[6]

As the Ultimate Terror ( 最 さい 悪 あくの 恐 きょう 怖 ふ, Saiaku no Kyōfu?, lit. "Worst Fear")[1][2] and Great King of Terror ( 恐 きょう 怖 ふの 大 だい 魔 ま 王 おう, Kyōfu no Daimaō?, lit. "Great Devil King of Fear"),[3][4] the Death Devil is prophesied to descend to Earth on July 1999 and bring upon the apocalypse, which would end humanity and usher in an Age of Devils.[11][12][13]

Posing as a student at Fourth East High School and being the true leader of the Chainsaw Man Church, her actions are what drives the story's events as well as the conflict between mankind and Devils, but it's later revealed that she supposedly managed to subvert The Prophecy into a more catastrophic future.

Abilities

As a Fiend, Yoru can not make contracts, although under unique circumstances, she is able to use a Contract Trigger ability because of her Gun Gauntlet. She has all the other standard Devil abilities, such as regeneration, reviving in Hell after being killed, restoring her health by consuming blood, fear empowerment and enhanced physical prowess. Despite being rather weak at the start, Yoru has the potential to become one of the strongest Horsemen, even strong enough to prevent the upcoming apocalypse. As stated by her elder sister, the Death Devil, Yoru in full power, is not only powerful enough to stop the apocalypse of her descend, but she is now able to make an apocalyptic scenario far worse than the one she wanted to prevent.
Supernatural Abilities

Although part of the Four Horsemen, Yoru claims that her Devil power weakened after her body was partially devoured by Chainsaw Man. This, combined with the long absence of wars in the human world (the concept of which is only been relegated to movies and video games), has greatly diminished her original strength.[24] Adding to that her strength was reduced even further by becoming a Fiend.

Combining all of these factors her current strength is a mere fraction of her full power and is by far the weakest horsemen.
During the events of Chainsaw Man Church arc, Yoru experienced a significant power boost due to the fear of war rapidly rising.
As Nuclear Weapons are reinvented in the world, she exhibits a massive boost in her overall power and abilities.
Due to her being the embodiment of the fear of war, Yoru is noted to not only draw on the fear of wars and conflicts, but also draw on the fear of the masses towards all concepts related to them, such as weapons. This was first hinted at when Yoru noted that the bulk of her power also stemmed from the Gun Devil and Tank Devil, as both guns and tanks are weapons heavily used in wars and conflicts, and thus the fear of these weapons increases the fear of wars.

She is very insecure and gets royally offended whenever her strength or intellect is questioned.[4][5] Yoru is also worried about losing her power and being forgotten, showing a more sensitive side. Adding to that, she seems to show signs of sympathy, at least towards Asa. Yoru is able to form emotional attachments to others, such as her "comrades" whom she wants to rescue from Pochita's stomach, and the Gun and Tank Devils whom she considers her children and is hesitant to turn into weapons, even if she eventually does so. She is very content with eating basic foods like plain bread showing she isn't very demanding when it comes to physical pleasures.

She does not have a good understanding of human society or relationships and takes things at face value, is easy to provoke and often threatens Mitaka with death. Though over time she grows closer to her and seems to understand and adapt to human society more, albeit she's still quite inept and will often unintentionally worsen her relationship with Asa because of that. Despite her apparent social-ineptitude she is very cunning in dangerous situations such as when fighting Devils and is easily able to keep a cool head unlike Asa. Though in the most extreme of circumstances Yoru will panic and scream out in fright, such as when Asa was caught by the Falling Devil.

Personality

Yoru is first shown to be very confident and prideful, treating her opponents as mere warm-ups and confidently vowing to take back the Nuclear Weapons Devil from Chainsaw Man. This might be a sign of her over-confidence as she lost to him previously while at full strength and is significantly weaker now. However, she is aware of her limitations and will back down from a fight if she believes the odds are against her.[1][2] Yoru holds little sentimental value or attachments to humans, and is mostly uncaring of Mitaka's feelings, as evidenced by her blatant disregard for Mitaka's feelings of friendship for Yuko, repeatedly asking Mitaka to kill Yuko to use as a weapon or when she goes as far as to physically hurt Asa herself to forcefully regain control albeit with the intention of saving them both. She's been shown to be very cold and logical which clashes with Asa's highly emotional personality. Since she's completely unaffected by the Falling Devil, that means she easily gets over highly traumatic events such as being almost killed by Pochita and losing her power. Due to her predisposed nature as the War Devil, she keeps getting into conflicts with everyone around her, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not. Ironically these conflicts usually serve to hurt her. Later, Yoru devastates a whole city while using her powers and laughs maniacally when looking at the destruction she caused, reminding Asa that she, at her core, is still a devil.
Unlike her fellow Horsemen Makima and Death Devil, who are almost always calm and composed, Yoru is more "human" as in flawed, immature and naïve. She is prone to losing her temper, and became embarrassed and angry at being rescued unintentionally by her archenemy, Chainsaw Man. In her anger, she sometimes throws childish tantrums by punching and screaming into the pillows on Asa's bed.

Appearance

Near-death State

Following the battle with the Four Horsemen and Weapon Devils, Yoru was also reduced to a “near-death state”, due to Pochita consuming most of her body. In this state, she appears to have a bird-like body, similar to a dark-colored owl or potoo with a piercing gaze. While her bird form is similar to Pochita's dog form, her true form is still unknown. The recognizable ringed horseman eyes are also present in this form.
Fiend

After taking over Asa's body and occupying half of her brain, the War Devil took on her appearance, but with added facial scars across the center of her face and left cheek, which are in the same location where Mitaka's face was slashed by the Class President. When Yoru takes over, her eyes have multiple rings, similar to Makima, who was her sister and another Horseman. Her hair is also usually worn loose rather than in twin tails like Mitaka, and her posture is a little more straightened and confident in comparison to the timid and shy Asa. Yoru always wears the same clothes as Asa, most commonly a school uniform, since they share the same brain and just need to switch control between each other.

Yoru (ヨル, Yoru?) is the secondary antagonist of the Academy Saga. She is the War Devil (戦せん争そうの悪あく魔ま, Sensō no Akuma?) who embodies the concept of war. She is a member of the Four Horsemen, who now occupies Asa Mitaka's body as a Fiend.

Following her taking over Mitaka's body, Yoru sets out to locate Chainsaw Man, whom secretly attends the Fourth East High School with them. She also coerces Asa into looking for a target to seduce and turn into a weapon. They choose Denji, however they eventually fail and lose their memories. After a meeting with Death, she becomes a secret member of the Chainsaw Man Church.

After defeating Pochita and regaining her power through the increased fear of war, Yoru plans on erasing the Death Devil to usher in a world of endless war without death.
