Squire: A young man who served a knight, learning the skills necessary for battle and court life.
Knight: The title given to a squire who has demonstrated skill in combat and has been knighted by a lord or king.
Single Knight: A knight who served directly under a lord or earl, without commanding other knights.
Banner Knight: A knight who had demonstrated bravery and skill in combat, and who could command a company of knights in battle.
Orders of Chivalry: In addition to military ranks, there were religious and military orders such as the Templars, Hospitallers and Teutonic Knights, with their own internal hierarchies, which included titles such as Knight Commander and Grand Master.
Knight Commander: A regional leader within a knightly order.
Grand Master: The supreme leader of a knightly order.

The path to becoming a knight began as a squire, then one was promoted to knight, and from there one could reach higher ranks such as knight banneret, who commanded a group of knights, or even become a leader of a knightly order with titles such as Knight Commander or Grand Master.
