What came from the stars

It all started a couple of months ago, scientists had discovered a large mass of flesh floating in space, which seemed to be equal to or larger than the Earth. Attempts were made to conduct studies on the fleshy mass, but because it was "too expensive," governments refused to fund any kind of research, So scientists could only limit themselves to viewing the large red object through telescopes and making theories.
By the time the existence of this thing was revealed to the public, it was given a rather unthreatening name, of course, so as not to scare the masses with the obvious giant chunk of meat floating in space. It was called "Eve" which, knowing everything that would happen later, must have been a cruel joke of fate.
Weeks passed and the initial stir that Eva had caused died down; at this point, little to nothing was said about it.
While everyone lived in blissful ignorance, scientists were alarmed as Ava approached Earth at alarming speeds, and governments? Well... They did everything possible to prevent this news from coming to light.
By the time people realized that Eve was coming to Earth, it was already too late. That "thing", since it could no longer even be called a meteorite, stopped its descent into the atmosphere and from its fleshy being, it took out an enormous eye from which it began to release a kind of gas from its pupil.
At first, people were confused and scared. Governments attacked the thing with everything they had, but that didn't stop it. "Eva" orbited the Earth for a week, releasing that gas. And one day, just as it came, it left... but that was only the beginning of the problems.
A few days after Eve's passage through the earth, humanity began to be affected by the consequences of this. Many people began to get sick, many succumbed to the disease, others... suffered a worse fate...

The gas that Eve had spread across the earth seemed to contain viruses for which humanity was not prepared.
The virus, which was called "slither" could generate a series of mutations in the host which could lead to unpredictable results.

The virus could cause the carrier's limbs to slowly stop working, causing the host to suffer strokes, constant spasms in the abdominal wall, temporary blindness, and in the final phase of the disease, a necrosis that spreads slowly and painfully through the host's brain.

and the above described, is at best, at worst, the host could become a "crawler"

A "crawler" is generated when the slither fails to kill the host. Crawlers often have mutations that vary from person to person. Some develop swelling in parts of their body, others develop tumors in the brain that constantly activate their gag reflex.

There are a number of characteristics and behaviors that all crawlers have in common:
-All crawlers will seek to spread the slither if they have the opportunity
-Crawlers retain their survival instinct, so they can make decisions that ensure their survival, making them difficult to kill.
-Although all crawlers prefer human flesh over any kind of food, this does not mean that they can only eat it, since they have been seen eating normal food in order to survive.
-since the infection is transmitted by air or bodily fluids, crawlers will try to bite uninfected people, although they have also been seen trying to tear off gas masks from people wearing them or attempting to vomit into exposed wounds

Since the apocalypse began, governments have rapidly disintegrated, and the wealthy, who could afford bunkers and supplies, have barricaded themselves in at the slightest sign of danger. while the middle class tried to survive with what they could and while they saw the poor succumb to the slither or become crawlers. Although none of this was the norm, there were middle-class people who were able to barricade themselves with the few resources at their disposal, and several upper-class people were affected by the slither.
The world is chaos and people do what they can to survive, things like friendship or trust are scanned. In this world it is the survival of the fittest, which has led to the worst side of humanity.

Things like food and water have become three times more important, as there is not only the risk of the food or water being infected, but people have to fight each other for it and sometimes even fight against the crawlers themselves to prevent them from taking it away.

Gas masks are a precious asset, so people are now willing to kill to get their hands on one.

Firearms became more important, since they not only serve to fight against crawlers, but also to defend yourself from other people who want to rob you.
As demand for firearms increased, so did the demand for ammunition.

Gasoline, oil and in general any flammable liquid became essential, since they can be used to make lamps, start fires, create Molotov cocktails, etc.
