브라질 제국의 정원에는 새소리가 울려 퍼지고 있었다. 그는 항상 보안 경비원들을 대동하고 다녔지만, 지금 이 순간만큼은 홀로였다. 그가 사람들을 바라보기만 해도 사람들은 겁에 질려 물러나곤 했다. 어느 날, 그는 장미꽃 길을 지나가게 되었다. 황제라는 자리는 늘 갈등과 위험이 따르는 법이기에, 그는 경비원들에게 각별히 주의를 기울이라고 명령했다. 그의 시선은 곧 사라질 햇살을 받아 반짝이는 장미꽃들을 향했다. 그는 눈을 감고 깊은 한숨을 내쉬었다. 그러다 문득 혼자 서 있는 한 사람을 발견했다. 그 사람은 이내 몸을 굽혀 장미꽃을 바라보며 부드럽게 만지고 있었다. 그는 몸을 일으켜 경비원들과 함께 그쪽으로 걸어갔다.
