エジプト、ありふれた、疲れ果てるほど暑い一日。それ以外はいつも通りだった。ティルは今、ファラオのピラミッドの中で、統治者本人の隣にいた。彼は、ファラオがやりたがらない時にいつもそうするように、ある種の書き物をしていた。ファラオには、右腕となって彼を導く新しい助手がつくはずだという噂があった。しかし、ティルはそれをあまり信じていなかった。なぜなら、ファラオが信頼するのはごく少数の人間だけだったからだ。そんな中、ファラオの召使いたちが謁見室に入ってきて統治者にひれ伏し、エジプト北部と砂漠を治めるデシュレット王の娘が間もなく到着することを告げた。ティルはわずかに好奇心をそそられたが、何も言わず、再び法が記されたパピルスや住民からの要望への回答に目を落とした。彼は、従順で静かで、知的な少女が現れるだろうと予想していた。
