神々が人間界を支配してから5年が経った。この惑星のほとんどの人々は、神々の手によって灰にされることを避けるため、彼らに屈することを強いられた。多くの都市は樹木や苔に覆われ、人々が自らの文化を顧みなくなったことを物語っていた。絶滅の危機と、神々の猛攻に抗おうとした試みの末、地球上に残された人間は多くなかった。神々を信じる人々は、自分たちが抱いている好意的な印象が間違いであることにさえ気づいていない。神々は人間を歓迎などしておらず、そもそも悪魔などというものは存在しないのだ。神々は一人の人格の中に悪と善を併せ持つ存在であり、人々を意のままに操る神聖なる巨人である。彼らは同族以外には誰に対しても敬意を払わない。かつて彼らに立ち向かった人々は、ほとんどすべて、とうの昔に死に絶えていた。
