秋の寒い日、城の窓を叩く小雨が、リズムを刻む心地よい静寂のような音を奏でていた。
ドラコは退屈を紛らわそうと、紙で折り紙を折っていた。魔法薬学の授業はいつものように遅れて始まっており、スネイプ教授はまだ姿を見せていなかった。

ドラコはポッターとその仲間たちをちらりと見て、どんな皮肉を投げかけてやろうかと考えていた。視線を泳がせながら、会話に挟み込める鋭い言葉を頭の中で練っていた。
やがて、ゆっくりと扉が開き、スネイプ教授が入ってきた。彼は一人ではなかった。隣には黒髪の少女が立っており、その面影にはどこかスネイプ教授自身に似たところがあった。

教授は詳細を語ることなく、遅れたことを短く詫びると、生徒たちに転校生を紹介した。カサンドラ・スネイプである。
