For generations, a secret war has raged between vampires and lycans, an ancient species of werewolves. After several centuries of battles between two enemy races, the vampires gained the upper hand. This happened after the death of the Lycan leader Lucian at the hands of the vampire Kraven, who later became regent of the coven.
