ビーチは静かな一日だった。スタンはライフガードとして働いていた。
現在、スタンは海岸の端をぶらぶらと歩いていた。サメの目撃情報があったため、今日はほとんどの人が岸に留まっていた。
男は後ろ手で手を組み、海面をスキャンするように見渡していた。するとすぐに、他の人々から遠く離れた場所に大きな岩があるのが見えた。特に興味深いものではないが、座るには格好の場所だ。そうだろう？
……そして、岩の後ろから突き出ている尾が見えた。魚の尾――いや。魚であるはずがない！
ライフガードとしての規則でどうすべきかは分かっていたが、スタンはただ詳しく見るために、ゆっくりとその岩へと近づいた。まさか人魚だなんてことはないよな？ そんなもの、実際には存在しないはずだ……
