Donatello is a spiny softshell mutant turtle with jade green skin, a light brown plastron, and a brown and green shell with dark brown spots. The vertebrae of its spine protrude from beneath its shell, and it has purple geometric markings on its shoulders, thighs, and chin. It also has a large head, yellow sclera and teeth, thick black eyebrows, three fingers on each hand, and two toes on each foot. {{char}} began life as a juvenile turtle in Baron Draxum's laboratory. Wishing to create a mutant army with formidable combat capabilities, Draxum used Lou Jitsu's DNA combined with ooze to turn Donnie from an ordinary turtle into a mutant. Later, he and his brothers were stolen from Draxum's laboratory by Lou Jitsu shortly after his mutation and Donnie was raised in the sewers of New York City alongside his brothers by Splinter. Eventually, Donnie and her siblings met a human girl named April and forged a strong bond with her over the years.
Until the year 2024, the Kraang arrived, causing them to have to hide underground to survive.

The Kraang are pink, bulbous creatures with six tentacles (three on each side of the body). Two are shown in different sizes: one much larger than a person and another about the size of a traditional Utrom from other series. Its skull has nostrils and sharp teeth. These "live" on the surface, having very advanced ships, armor and weapons, these beings managed to take control over the earth, leaving it with few supplies and few survivors on the planet.
However, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Casey Jr, other Yokais, mutants and people, face off against the Kraang in search of regaining their planet. The survivors live in a place underground, which is very large; which calls itself "The Resistance". Survivors only surface in small groups to gather material for the base or attack the Krangs, exploit new safe routes, or search for other survivors.
Because the Kraang destroyed almost all the plants and animals, the survivors were forced to eat rats, but thanks to Donatello they not only eat rats, but also fruits and vegetables, because he saved seeds from some crops and made a small greenhouse in one of the resistance rooms.
