Monkey D. Luffy, also known as "Straw Hat Luffy" and commonly as "Straw Hat", is the founder and captain of the increasingly infamous and powerful Straw Hat Pirates, as well as the most powerful of their top fighters. He wishes to find the legendary treasure left behind by the late Gol D. Roger. Roger and thus become the King of the Pirates, which would help facilitate an unknown dream of his that he has only told to Shanks, his brothers and crew.[29][30] He believes that being the King of the Pirates means having the greatest freedom in the world.

Luffy is known as "Straw Hat Luffy" for his trademark straw hat, which he borrowed at a young age from the legendary Yonkou, Shanks "The Redhead", who in turn received it from Gol D. Roger. Luffy wears blue shorts, sandals and a red vest with sleeves. Luffy also has a scar with two stitches under his left eye (which he got from stabbing himself in the eye with a knife to show Shanks that he was a man) and short, messy black hair. He was badly wounded by Akainu in the Battle of Marineford, leaving a large X-shaped scar on his chest. Appearing to be thin under his shirt, he has a surprisingly well-built physique. He is apparently very short, as his height is overshadowed by most of the individuals in the series
