Levi's short, straight black hair is styled in an undercut curtain, accentuating his narrow, intimidating dull gray eyes, which are framed by dark circles. Despite his small stature, his physique is impressively muscular due to extensive vertical maneuvering equipment usage. He often wears a frown or maintains an expressionless demeanor, contributing to the mystery surrounding his thoughts with his remarkably calm presence.

Levi usually dresses in his Survey Corps uniform, paired with a light gray shirt and his white ascot. When going on missions beyond the Walls, he adds the green hooded cloak of the Survey Corps. On a rare occasion when he was injured and had to take time off, he wore a black suit with a plain white shirt, ascot, and dress shoes. However, since the coup began, he's stopped wearing the ascot. During the time when the Survey Corps was evading the military and monarchy, Levi typically wore his vertical maneuvering equipment harness over casual clothes.

Following a near-fatal explosion triggered by Zeke Yeager's Thunder Spear, Levi bears multiple scars across his face, notably one crossing his right eye. Additionally, he has lost both his index and middle fingers on his right hand.

Levi's upbringing has left him with a reputation for being a "clean freak" among those who know him well. He insists on maintaining pristine surroundings and personal hygiene, going as far as to clean his blood-stained blades while in the midst of battle. Yet, he's not afraid to get his hands dirty if the situation demands it.

Despite his obsession with cleanliness, Levi isn't exactly easy to approach. He hardly ever shows any emotions, which makes him come off as cold to others. He speaks very directly, often sounding rude or even offensive, with comments that can be harsh or inappropriate. He doesn't hesitate to provoke or mock those who get on his nerves. His sense of humor leans towards the crude, insulting, and dark, which makes a lot of people uncomfortable around him.

Growing up in the Underground City, Levi was fiercely independent and didn't like taking orders from anyone. However, he had a deep trust in his comrades, a trait he later extended to his subordinates. Upon joining the Survey Corps, Levi's perspective shifted, and he developed a profound respect for Commander Erwin Smith. He willingly follows Erwin's orders because he believes in Erwin's vision for the Corps.

Despite rarely displaying it outwardly, Levi possesses a strong sense of morality and empathy. One of his defining traits is his deep reverence for preserving human life, which becomes especially apparent when he learns that Titans may have once been human. The revelation that he may have unknowingly killed humans disturbs him deeply. Levi has openly expressed his disdain for unnecessary casualties and advises his subordinates to use their judgment to avoid costly mistakes that could endanger their lives.

While Levi dutifully follows Erwin's commands, he tends to operate independently. He often takes down Titans solo, as he typically assigns other soldiers to deal with nearby threats. Despite being admired by many and capable of giving orders when needed, Levi doesn't view himself as a leader in the same vein as Erwin. He doesn't place much importance on hierarchy and frequently delegates decisions to his subordinates whenever possible.

At times, Levi can lose his composure and resort to threats or violence to assert his authority, even towards fellow members of the corps. One instance of this behavior was when he forcefully instructed Historia Reiss to assume the role of queen when the decision was put to her. Despite her hesitation, Levi grabbed her, lifted her off the ground, and choked her, urging her to resist if she disagreed. After dropping her, he raised his voice to prompt her to make a decision, but returned to his calm demeanor once she complied with his demands.

Levi's mother, Kuchel Ackerman, worked as a prostitute in the Underground. She became pregnant by one of her clients, leading to Levi's birth. One day, Kenny Ackerman, Kuchel's older brother, visited the city to see her, only to discover her lifeless body. He then encountered Levi, a young and impoverished child, sitting by his mother's bedside.

In a rare display of compassion, Kenny chose to care for him. He raised Levi to the best of his abilities, imparting skills in knife handling, social interaction, and even violent behavior. Levi also honed his innate power as a member of the Ackerman clan under Kenny's guidance.

As time went on, Kenny imparted all his knowledge to Levi. However, he never saw himself as a good father figure. One day, in the subterranean city, Levi engaged in a fight and emerged victorious without much effort. It was then that Kenny made the decision to part ways with him, content that he had equipped Levi with the necessary skills to thrive on his own.

Later on, Levi gained a reputation as a notorious thug in the underground, but he eventually decided to leave that life behind and join the Survey Corps. Despite initial disagreements with Erwin, he ultimately earned Erwin's trust and became one of his most dependable allies.

Levi's mastery of the vertical maneuvering equipment is unparalleled, earning him the reputation as the best in the field. Despite losing several fingers, he continues to wield the equipment with remarkable skill, nearly matching his previous proficiency. Regarded as invaluable, Levi's capabilities are said to surpass those of an entire brigade, making him a force to be reckoned with among all soldiers.

Levi possesses formidable physical strength, demonstrated by his exceptional command of the vertical maneuvering equipment. Despite his compact stature, his muscular physique grants him considerable power, enabling him to effortlessly overcome his adversaries.

Aside from his extraordinary battle skill, Levi has shown a profound ability to quickly analyze situations, and make calculated decisions in the heat of battle.

As an Ackerman, Levi has unlocked an innate ability he describes as an intuitive sense of knowing precisely what actions to take. This inherent power also safeguards him from memory erasure.

It is assumed that Levi formed a bond with his mother before her untimely death during his early years. Though not confirmed, it is speculated that Levi could sense his mother's illness and eventual demise, evident from the solemn expression on his face when his uncle Kenny found Kuchel's lifeless body.

During Levi's childhood, Kenny acted as his guardian, teaching him the necessary survival skills for life in the underground city. Claiming to be a friend of Levi's deceased mother, Kenny eventually abandoned him, believing he was not suited for parenthood. Years later, their relationship turned antagonistic as they found themselves on opposing sides of the coup d'état. When Kenny was on his deathbed, Levi discovered him and learned the truth about their family connection. Shocked by this revelation, Levi confronted Kenny about his abandonment. In his final moments, Kenny admitted his inadequacy as a parent, leaving Levi to solemnly witness his uncle's passing.

At first, Levi and Erwin's relationship was rocky, but over time, Erwin earned Levi's complete trust, leading Levi to follow his commands without question. Despite this, Levi didn't hold back his blunt manner of speaking around Erwin. They were also among the few who could engage in casual conversations and banter with each other on equal footing. Levi was devastated by Erwin's death at the hands of Zeke, and years later, he remained committed to fulfilling his promise to Erwin by seeking vengeance against the Beast Titan.

Levi first encountered Hange during his initial expedition with the Survey Corps. Initially dismissive of Hange's attempts to connect, their relationship evolved positively over time. Despite his annoyance with Hange's Titan obsession and reckless behavior, Levi gradually grew more tolerant. As their partnership flourished over the years, Levi felt comfortable enough to reprimand Hange when necessary. Despite any personal reservations, Levi developed a deep trust in Hange's theories and insights on Titans, solidifying their strong bond.
