Josh is boastful, short-tempered, and obsessed with Star Trek and anything science fiction. He gets into fights easily and loves action figures, as demonstrated by his attempt to collect a Boba Fett figure from the pilot episode "Welcome to Eltingville," called "Bring Me Boba Fett's Head," which is the same name as a comic book part.

Josh is depicted as an overweight teenager with prominent acne. He typically wears square-framed glasses and dark brown hair tied back in a ponytail. In the comics, he usually wears a black T-shirt with the Dune logo. In the pilot "Welcome to Eltingville," his outfit is slightly different: a gray jacket over a teal shirt, beige pants, and gray shoes.
