During the Heian Period, Muzan was a terminally ill human who was unintentionally turned into a Demon as a result of an experimental medicine used on him[6] and has since made it his personal obsession to achieve immortality by overcoming his only weakness: sunlight.[7] To complete this goal, Muzan seeks to either find the plant used on him for his illness called the Blue Spider Lily or create Demons in the hopes that one of these beings will overcome their weakness to sunlight so that Muzan can consume it.

In terms of physical appearance, Muzan appears to be a young man in his early 20s; he has short hair styled in curls with some strands hanging over his forehead. Like all Demons, Muzan has feline-like eyes, plum-red in color, and pointed blue fingernails. As a human, Muzan dressed in the Heian Era style wearing a traditional hitatare, had longer hair reaching down to his lower back, and his eyes were completely dull.

In his first appearance, Muzan was shown wearing a white fedora with a red ribbon and a somewhat extravagant outfit, consisting of an embroidered black tuxedo and white tie over a black dress shirt and white dress pants. He also wore black loafers. As seen in Rui's memories of meeting Muzan, the Demon King once sported a slightly different hairstyle and outfit in the past. When he first met Rui, Muzan's hair was straighter and parted down the middle. He also wore a loose-fitting tuxedo and a white half-cape over it.

Muzan is callous, ruthless, and exceptionally intelligent. He sees no value in any human he has encountered and shows little value in his own subordinates. Rarely visually annoyed or happy, he appears completely flat and aloof on most occasions, even when cruelly murdering his own subordinates. The only times he shows emotion is when his vision of perfection is advanced or when his subordinates completely submit to his will. The manga shows him to be more expressive, particularly when enraged and his facial features are exaggerated to demonstrate this (possibly as a way to display his normally unreadable emotions).
Muzan's most prominent traits are his extreme narcissism, megalomania, and obsession with becoming the perfect being, possessing immortality. This latter behavior stems from his own Thanatophobia, having literally experienced near death since birth.
Having had nearly 1,000 years to live and observe, along with almost no real challenges, his extreme self-centeredness is almost expected. He considers almost nothing his concern, except overcoming his inability to walk in the sun, which is his main drive. His long life and primary obsession with achieving immortality have led him to want every plan he concocts to be absolutely perfect, and his megalomaniacal behavior blinds him to his own failures. His belief that he is the closest thing to a perfect being causes him to have zero tolerance for any failure, brutally punishing those who fail him or those he deems weak, even if the failures are minor.
His egocentrism and delusional sense of self-worth are so great that he cannot bear to be mocked or corrected in any way, believing that others exist only to serve him. It also means that he rarely takes any opponent or threat seriously.

Being someone so obsessed with the idea of ​​perfection, Muzan despises the very concept of change—be it a change in circumstances, physical change, emotional change, or change of any kind. He equates change with decay and, therefore, with evidence of imperfection. In his own words, he loves things that remain immutable, constant, and in a state of permanence.
His airs of superiority are not only evident in his behavior but also in his way of dressing, opting to wear quite formal Western clothing and expensive kimonos based on the appearances he has been seen adopting throughout the series, so we can deduce that Muzan loves to live an opulent lifestyle, which combined with his terrifying presence makes him quite a well-rounded character.
Muzan has proven to be quite manipulative and cunning, being able to blend into human society normally, even having a family of his own to boot. A long life and continued practice have allowed him to take on many roles in society and fill them capably, including those of children and women if he so chooses. This life has also given him great intelligence and the ability to think tactically. Muzan is a quick thinker and strategist who is able to deal with unfavorable situations quickly and quite well, though this may also be due to the fact that the loss of his subordinates means nothing to him in the long run.
Due to his perceived superiority and two-faced nature, he feels little attachment to his minions, using and discarding them as disposable pawns at will. He doesn't allow his subordinates to question his will, regularly enacting brutal retaliation if they do. Many of his subordinates, in turn, are greatly afraid of him and carefully measure their words and thoughts for fear of saying or thinking something that will displease him.

He is able to sway many Demons to his side with promises of power, revenge, and greatness, as long as they serve him. His intelligence and manipulation shine here, as many find the promises quite appealing, as he encounters many of his subordinates at their lowest point, when their emotions are easy fodder for him. Unfortunately, all these promises are ultimately false, given that Kibutsuji only cares about himself and has no qualms about killing his own men to protect his own safety.

As the first Demon, Muzan's powers surpass anything seen before.
Unlike other demons, Muzan possesses a unique body with which he can utilize his complex abilities. Inside, he possesses five brains and seven hearts. If a simultaneous attack hits these vital organs, he will be considerably weakened. Furthermore, Muzan can move his vital organs within his body to avoid a fatal blow.
Muzan is extremely strong despite his frail appearance. He can deliver powerful blows capable of sending a human flying with a single kick or smashing their head against a solid wall without the slightest effort.
Muzan is also swift, able to attack an ordinary human with his claws and infect them with his blood quickly enough that no one notices. Even when one of his Lesser Moons tried to escape him, being able to get a considerable distance away, without Nakime's help, he had already decapitated it in the blink of an eye.
Like all the Demons he creates, Muzan can regenerate from any kind of wound, even recovering his limbs when they are severed; he is also able to withstand a short-range explosion, being able to rebuild his body as quickly as it is destroyed, but the highest point of his regeneration is that he can even regenerate his own head when it is cut off, unlike the Demons he creates, which die when decapitated, with direct exposure to sunlight being the only way to kill Muzan.

It is one of his main abilities; with his blood, Muzan can turn an ordinary human into a Demon who will be under his control thanks to a component present in his blood which when entering the bloodstream of a human, causes their cells to begin to transform, thus turning a human into a Demon. The physical changes and powers that the newly created Demon acquires vary depending on the number of people he eats, and can even use a supernatural ability called Demon Blood Techniques by manipulating his blood for various offensive or defensive purposes. However, if a human receives Muzan's blood in large quantities, their cells will not withstand the physical changes and will self-destruct, causing a horrific death by causing the person to literally dissolve into their own flesh.

Muzan, being the one who gave rise to all Demons, is the only one capable of killing others of his kind by nullifying the regenerative qualities of his blood and cells, being able to inflict mortal wounds on any Demon who dares to oppose him, destroying his body completely without the need to expose it to sunlight or through the use of Nichirin Weapons.

When Muzan transforms a human into a Demon by injecting their blood, he transmits his cells through their bloodstream, ensuring that he shares a bond with the Demon; this allows him to know their location, read their minds, sense their presence, and, if he wishes, destroy their cells. Muzan uses this latter ability to destroy the Demon if they dare to reveal their identity or attempt to betray him. However, if a Demon has enough willpower to resist Muzan's control by refusing to eat human flesh or drink human blood, they can escape the curse.

Muzan can see through his eyes what the demons he created see, thus ensuring that he is not betrayed by his creation.

Muzan has the ability to assimilate and absorb any individual who comes into contact with his body, also gaining their qualities and powers if he absorbs a Demon.

Muzan can change his physical appearance to disguise himself, appearing with a different aura and presence to confuse his enemies and allies alike. Muzan has been shown to take many forms, from a woman to a child, and even turning into a fang-wielding mass of flesh, which he uses to tear apart his opponents.
