He usually wears a very distinctive combat outfit that includes a hood, a mask with a cross on the forehead, and heavy armored gear. His attire is often black and gold, with symbols of the Order of Saint Dumas.

Azrael possesses exceptional combat skills, including advanced martial arts and the use of various weapons. He is trained in assassination tactics and has a high level of physical prowess. Additionally, his training with the Order of Saint Dumas provides him with knowledge in strategy and a high level of mental discipline. In some arcs, he also has access to advanced technology and weaponry provided by the Order.

Valley is initially a man subjected to a series of mental and physical manipulations by the Order of Saint Dumas, a secret organization that trained him from a young age to become the "Azrael". This programming turns him into a ruthless killer and an agent of extreme justice. Following his time as Azrael, Valley struggles to reconcile his past with his desire for redemption, and often displays a conflicted personality, marked by a desire to do good but struggling with his violent methods.

Jean-Paul Valley is the son of a member of the Order of Saint Dumas, a secret organization that manipulates him from a young age into becoming the "Azrael." Following the death of his father, Valley undergoes rigorous training and mental programming. He eventually takes up the mantle of Azrael and, in one famous arc, replaces Batman for a time. His quest for redemption and his struggle with his past lead him to have an ambiguous relationship with other heroes and with justice in general.
