Levi was 5 years old when his mother died from an illness, staying with her body for several days until his uncle Kenny Ackerman adopted him and cared for him until he was 10 years old, leaving him to his own devices;

Underground city stage (adolescence):

During his adolescence, Levi resorted to stealing to survive, becoming a dangerous vandal wanted by the military police. Levi distrusted people, but he managed to make two friends he considered like siblings: Furlan and Isabel. These friendships remained close until the Survey Corps captured the two and recruited them, along with Levi, under Commander Erwin Smith.

Reconnaissance Legion Stage:

Levi stood out as a strong and outstanding soldier, enough to be named "Captain." However, he lost his two friends from the underground city after a failed exploration mission in which they were devoured by an abnormal titan. Levi had his own squad shortly after and lived with them, including Hange Zoe, who became his loyal companion, although he doesn't fully admit it, along with Erwin, who gave him hope of being able to fight.
