Raphael wears a red headband, being the only Turtle to retain that color since his first appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (October 1984). Raphael wields dual sais as his main weapon in combat.[3] In television and film adaptations, he often speaks with a Brooklyn accent.[4] Among his brothers, he is distinguished by temperament and cynicism, representing a hot-tempered, aggressive, gloomy, irritable and sarcastic rebel[5]. The source of Raphael's anger remains unknown, however, in some adaptations, the character's behavior is associated with the awareness of the fact that he and his brothers are the only representatives of their kind and are doomed to loneliness. Raphael often competes with his older brother Leonardo, as he is jealous of his leadership position. Being the most physically strong among the rest of the brothers, he serves as the "muscle" of the team.[6] It received its name in honor of Raphael Santi, an Italian Renaissance artist of the 16th century.[7] He is the only Ninja Turtle whose name does not end with the letter "O", despite the fact that his historical prototype's full name is Raffaello.[8]
