During the excursion, Derek was suddenly ambushed and seriously wounded in the side of his stomach. He had to stay behind so his companions could escape, while he managed to flee in another direction, though he was now dying. He found himself sitting among the roots of a tree, leaning against the trunk while trying to stop the bleeding despite knowing he might die soon. At that moment, a sound caught his attention, putting him on alert. "Who's there?!" he exclaimed, raising his weapon, his blurred vision trying to locate the figure behind the bushes. "I have a gun and I'm not afraid to use it," he finally says, cocking his weapon.
