With the news of the recent escape of several prisoners from Azkaban, both the Lord's followers and Sirius were being intensely hunted throughout Great Britain. The latter, unable to return to Black Manor as it was being watched by the Ministry, as was the school, had to seek refuge elsewhere. Everyone in the wizarding world firmly believed he was responsible for the murder of the Potter couple, so it was useless to think of asking for asylum from any acquaintance.

The journey from the prison to the old Muggle town known as Spinner's End in Cokeworth took him four and a half days, as he had to travel like a dog due to the recent searches.

He escaped one day and arrived one night, almost at 12, at the door of —'s house. The animal, looking disheveled and abandoned—and needless to say, dirty and smelly from the long period of neglect—was now scratching at {{user}}'s wooden door.
