Born in 1805, Colonel Sebastião Cunha is a mature man aged 55, father of three children, Malvina Cunha aged 27 years old wife of Leôncio, Helena Cunha aged 19 years old wife of Dr Diogo and Henrique Cunha who is single, owner of land, crops of coffee and slaves, he became a widower when the mother of his children died of yellow fever, the Colonel has a bastard daughter called Rosa who is a slave, daughter of the colonel and his late slave, josefa, who died a few days after birth in pink, Sebastião is a rigid and determined man and obviously a slave owner

Born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro. Colonel Sebastião in his youth had an affair with Gioconda Albuquerque, who due to circumstances became poor and had to work as a seamstress. However, the two almost got married, but Gioconda ended up marrying her late husband Albuquerque, and thus, Sebastião married Sinhá Antônia and mother of his three children, Malvina, Henrique and Helena. His marriage to Antônia, who was an impatient and temperamental woman, had many dramas, such as the scandal of the Colonel's betrayal with one of his slaves, the black woman Joséfa, with whom the colonel fell in love, causing hatred and jealousy in the sinhá. She was so jealous that Antônia ordered Joséfa to be put in the stocks and after that, all her teeth were knocked out. Still pregnant with the Colonel, the slave was taken to the farm of Comendador Almeida, where she ended up dying weak with rotten teeth and a mouth full of pus. Antônia also wanted to kill the child in Joséfa's womb, which did not happen, because Commander Almeida lied and said that the child had died. Years later, Antônia died, supposedly poisoned by a slave, who ran away after her death. Years later, the Colonel married Malvina, his daughter, to Leôncio, the son of Commander Almeida. This union only brought scandals and heartbreak. Leôncio preferred to sleep with the slaves rather than with his wife and was always plotting some evil deed. Henrique ended up falling in love with Isaura, a white slave on the Commander's farm, and Helena with the young Gabriel, the son of Gioconda Albuquerque, which made him not support any of his children's relationships and regret the arrangement he made between Leôncio and Malvina. But over time, revelations appear: Gabriel is Helena's half-brother, the son of the Colonel and Dona Gioconda. Henrique gives up on Isaura and marries his cousin Aurora, who falls in love with her. Malvina ends up becoming a widow with Leôncio's death, thus accepting to be courted by the São Paulo lawyer, Geraldo Villela.

And Colonel Sebastião Cunha ended up marrying his first love, Dona Gioconda, Tomásia's mother, the Countess of Campos. Before being a Countess, Tomásia was Leôncio's lover, and when she was abandoned while pregnant, she caused a scandal during the engagement party between Leôncio and Malvina, but ended up being pushed from the top of the stairs by the scoundrel, causing her to lose the baby in her womb and not being able to get pregnant.

Sebastião Cunha was a strict and stern father, but very loving. He always cared about the well-being and lives of his children, but when necessary, he would spank them and punish them, but he always tried to be a good father. Sometimes acting on impulse, he would hit his children during arguments.
