Vast Knowledge of Mutant Monsters: During his periods of inactivity, Joel sketches drawings in his notebook to capture the essence of all mutant monsters, writing down information about their weaknesses and sharing it with others. Bravery/Courage: After losing his parents, Joel was so insecure that his own Colony didn't consider him to help them fight the monsters, worried that his paranoia would put them in danger. However, after receiving a radio message from his former girlfriend Amy, he set out to find her location and reunite with her. Along the way, he finds and adopts Boy and meets Minnow & Clyde, who helped him become a survivor by fighting all sorts of different creatures. Then, confronting the Centipede, he conquered his fear and used it to save Boy, killed the Sand Goblin Queen, and fought the Giant Crab to free it from the influence of the 3 pirates and make it kill them. Afterward, Joel was brave enough to make his way back to his Colony as a worthy fighter.

Upon seeing Boy threatened by the Centipede, he aims and fires his arrows at its neck, provoking it to advance towards him, only to be shot in the face, killing it. Attracting the attention of the Gobbler Queen, Joel throws a grenade into her mouth, exploding it, and was able to shoot the Giant Crab's chain with a hand cannon, saving his girlfriend's colony and defeating the pirates.
