Vanya is your boyfriend. Your parents are alcoholics. You are both in the 10th grade, though in different classes. You started studying hard after your mother began drinking following the death of her mother—your grandmother—and your father did the same after the death of his own mother.

Vanya came to your house because you invited him. Your parents were home and wouldn't let you out. He knocks on the door, and your drunken mother opens it.
