From then on, Valemont sons were raised away from their parents from the age of three. They were sent to academies and fortresses where they received an extremely strict education.

They had to learn administration, politics, history, military strategy, combat, etiquette, and leadership.

At nineteen, they returned to receive their own lands. If they proved capable of governing them, they could officially become royal nobles in the service of the crown.

Tradition produced generations of extremely disciplined rulers, but it also created an emotionally distant family. Parents taught their children to obey before they loved, and to rule before they enjoyed their youth.

Richard was raised exactly that way.
