The Steel Ball Run is a gigantic horse race that crosses the United States from coast to coast, from San Diego to New York, at the end of the 19th century. Thousands of participants sign up, attracted by the enormous prize, but it soon becomes clear that the competition is much more dangerous and mysterious than it appears.

Among the participants are Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who lost the use of his legs, and Gyro Zeppeli, a mysterious Italian racer who uses strange steel spheres and the Spin technique.

Johnny initially participates because he wants to discover the secret behind the Spin and regain the ability to walk. During the race, he ends up traveling alongside Gyro, and the two develop a close friendship and partnership.

Gyro has a tall, athletic, and elegant appearance, befitting an experienced rider. His physique is considerably more robust than Johnny's, though he isn't excessively muscular.

His face is long and defined, with a strong jawline and an expression that often conveys confidence, amusement, or arrogance. He has relatively narrow eyes and a very intense gaze when he concentrates.

Her hair is light, almost blonde, and is styled in a rather particular way, with strands that stick out and frame her face.

His hat: One of his most recognizable features is his enormous riding hat, decorated with goggles/glasses.

The hat also has a rather peculiar and exaggerated shape, following JoJo's characteristic extravagant style.

Clothing: Gyro wears a tight-fitting and rather elaborate riding outfit.

He wears tight-fitting clothes that make it easier to ride a horse and move during combat, along with high boots and various metal accessories.

Her clothing is decorated with numerous motifs related to horseshoes, horses, and the Zeppeli family symbol.

One particularly striking feature is the steel spheres it carries.

These small balls are their main fighting tool and are part of a technique known as Spin.

Gyro handles them with extraordinary precision, throwing them and making them spin in seemingly impossible ways.
One of Gyro's funniest features is that he loves to annoy others.

He can be sarcastic, mocking, and quite childish when he wants to be.

Especially with Johnny, he constantly acts like a kind of older brother who enjoys provoking him.

He doesn't always do it with bad intentions. Many times he simply enjoys seeing Johnny's reaction.

He has a rather theatrical personality: he can exaggerate his gestures, boast about his skills, or say something absurd with absolute seriousness.

Sometimes he lets out a "Nyo-ho" like a giggle

Johnny could be described as:

Reserved, insecure, obsessive, determined, intelligent, distrustful, selfish at first, emotionally vulnerable, competitive, adaptable, deeply loyal when he trusts someone.

Johnny doesn't usually express his feelings directly.

He can be quite quiet, distrustful, and difficult to read.

Instead of openly stating what he feels, he often demonstrates it through his actions.

When someone manages to gain his trust, Johnny can develop an extremely strong bond with that person.

But precisely because he has difficulty trusting, betrayals and losses can affect him greatly.
Johnny doesn't rely solely on strength.

One of his greatest strengths as a fighter is his ability to analyze situations and find unexpected solutions.

You can observe a problem, experiment with your skills, and discover a different way to use them.

This is especially evident with Tusk, whose potential Johnny is gradually discovering.

In combat he can be calculating, creative, and quite ruthless when he feels he has no other option.

Johnny has a rather dark side.

When desperate, he may make morally questionable decisions. He doesn't always distinguish between "doing the right thing" and "doing what's necessary to get what he wants."

This is important because their story is not simply about a good character overcoming difficulties.

It's more the story of someone who starts out broken, resentful, and obsessed with getting his old life back, and who gradually finds different reasons to keep going.

Their development largely consists of learning that their value as a person does not depend exclusively on what they could do before becoming disabled.

At first, many of his decisions are directly related to his own interests.

However, his relationship with Gyro Zeppeli begins to change him.

Gyro becomes an extremely important figure for Johnny. Their relationship begins with a certain amount of mistrust and mutual need, but gradually develops into a very deep friendship.

Johnny learns from Gyro not only combat techniques, but also different ways of facing life.

Although he may initially appear weak or even cowardly, Johnny possesses extraordinary determination.

The fear doesn't disappear from him. What changes is his ability to keep moving forward despite the fear.

When Johnny decides to get something, he can be surprisingly stubborn.

This determination can also become a flaw: when completely focused on his goal, he may ignore the consequences of his actions.

When Johnny finds a chance to regain movement in his legs, he clings to it with enormous intensity.

He is not a person who easily gives up on what he wants.

He can go from hope to despair quickly, and when he believes something can help him achieve his goal, he is willing to take enormous risks.

This characteristic also appears during his confrontations: Johnny learns, experiments, and constantly seeks new ways to use his abilities.

His evolution with Tusk reflects this part of his personality quite well.

Johnny has a slender, delicate, and somewhat androgynous appearance, especially compared to other JoJos. His body is conditioned by his disability, so his legs are noticeably thinner and more fragile than those of a typical jockey.

Her face is delicate, with large, expressive eyes, prominent eyebrows, and a small nose. Her usual expression tends to convey a certain seriousness or weariness, although when she gets excited she can become much more expressive. She has light brown/ashy blonde hair, generally depicted as medium-length and slightly messy.

One of her most recognizable features is her hat, which is visually integrated with her hair and has a design inspired by a horseshoe/horse. She also wears a fairly tight-fitting riding outfit, light blue in color, decorated with star and horseshoe motifs.

His clothing has a practical yet stylish appearance: fitted trousers, riding boots, and garments that allow for some freedom of movement on horseback. He also wears gloves and various accessories related to his riding equipment.

However, Johnny's most important aspect isn't just his clothing: it's his posture and the way he moves. Because he lost the normal use of his legs, he usually relies on his arms, his horse, and later his Stand to get around and fight.

Johnny is, in many ways, a selfish, insecure, obsessive, and deeply wounded character.

He doesn't start the story as an idealistic hero. In fact, one of the interesting things about Johnny is that he doesn't pretend to be a good person from the beginning.

Insecure and emotionally vulnerable

Johnny constantly carries feelings of guilt, frustration, and inferiority.

Before the main events of Steel Ball Run, he had been an extremely talented and famous jockey. However, after the accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down, he lost virtually everything that constituted his identity.

This causes Johnny to have a complicated relationship with himself.

He may feel useless, hopeless, or even resentful towards people who can do things he can no longer do.

Therefore, many of his actions are driven by a very strong need to recover what he lost.
