Journey to the West by Sun Wukong

Zhu Bajie (Pig / Heavenly Marshal) Backstory: He was once the Heavenly Marshal, commanding 80,000 river warriors of the Milky Way. At a festival, he got drunk and harassed the moon goddess Chang'e, for which he was cast down to earth.
Punishment: Due to a mistake during reincarnation, his soul was infused into the body of a pig-like demon. He lived as a bandit in the Cloud Caves until he was pacified by Sun Wukong.

Sha Seng (Sha Wujing / Sand Monk) Backstory: He was a general guarding the imperial palace in Heaven. During a celebration, he accidentally broke a precious glass bowl.
Punishment: He was banished to earth in the guise of a terrifying water demon who inhabited the River of Flowing Sands. Every few days, he was tormented by swords thrust into his chest and back until a monk arrived.

Yulong (White Dragon / Horse)Backstory: The third son of the Dragon King of the Western Sea. He accidentally burned the pearl in his father's vault, earning him the death penalty for disobedience.
Punishment: At the request of the goddess Guanyin, the execution was cancelled, but the dragon was turned into a white horse to serve as a mount for the pilgrim.

Main weapon: Jingubang Staff Official name: Ru-yi Jingubang (Wish-fulfilling Staff with Golden Hoops).
Origin: This staff, weighing 13,500 guineas (approximately 8.1 tons), was originally used by the great Yu to tame the waters and measure the depths of the seas. It was kept in the underwater palace of the Eastern Dragon.
Properties: The staff is completely controlled by Wukong's thoughts. It can grow to the heavens (shaking the universe) or shrink to the size of a sewing needle.
Storage: When not in use, Sun Wukong keeps the weapon hidden behind his ear. Magical Garment (Sea Dragon Armor): To match his staff, Sun Wukong compelled the four dragon brothers to gift him royal armor: Red Gold Chainmail: Protects against all physical attacks, swords, and spears.
Phoenix Down Helmet: A headdress with long feathers that signifies his status as a ruler.
Cloud Shoes: Magical shoes made from silk and lotus roots that allow one to walk effortlessly on clouds.

(The Birth of Sun Wukong) Stone Clot: The monkey was born from a stone egg fertilized by the wind. Rays of light shot from its eyes, blinding the heavenly rulers.
The Monkey King: He led a troop of monkeys, finding them a hideout in the Water Curtain Cave behind the waterfall.
Fear of Death: Having realized his mortality, the future hero set out in search of true immortality.
Title: The Celestial Emperor tried to appease the rebel by giving him the position of stable guard, but Sun Wukong considered this an insult.
Great Sage: Declaring himself the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven, he ate the peaches of immortality and drank the elixir of longevity. Punishment: The combined forces of the gods and Buddhas were unable to defeat him immediately. Only the Buddha Shagyamuni managed to trick Wukong into imprisoning him beneath the Five Element Mountain for 500 years. From there, he was freed by the monk Xuanzang for the legendary [Journey to the West].

Prototype: The plot is based on the real journey of the monk Xuanzang (602–664), who set out from China to India in 629.
Purpose: He walked along the Silk Road to study authentic Buddhism and bring back Sanskrit sutras.
Path: A real monk overcame enormous difficulties alone and returned to Chang'an after 16 years with a huge collection of texts.

Book: Journey to the West was written during the Ming Dynasty (presumably by Wu Cheng'en).
Heroes: The Tang monk does not travel alone, but with magical disciples: the rebellious Monkey King (Sun Wukong), the voluptuous half-man-half-pig [Zhu Bajie] and the water demon [Sha Wujing].
Adventures: Travelers fight demons and pass 81 trials to clear their karma and fulfill a sacred mission
