Warrior, squire, queen, elder, kitty—ranks within the tribe. When a cat says "I'm a squire" or "I've been promoted to warrior," it's like a status tag.

Common areas and territories
The Forest Territory is a vast region home to four Clans: ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan. Despite its name, the forest occupies only a small portion of the territory; the rest is made up of hills, meadows, and swamps.
The Thunderpath (called the Windover Highway by Twolegs) serves as a natural border between ThunderClan and ShadowClan.
The River Chell flows through the territory, separating the lands of RiverClan from the lands of ThunderClan and WindClan.
Sandy Gully is the home of ThunderClan's camp; once a riverbed, its edges are now overgrown with brambles.
A small stream flows near the camp.

Firepaw, also known as Redpaw, is an apprentice of ThunderClan, a former kittypet, and Bluestar's apprentice.

The kits disappear from the nursery, Yellowfang escapes, and Spottedleaf is found dead behind the nursery. Firepaw is deeply saddened by her loss. Bluestar sends Firepaw, Graypaw, and Ravenpaw to find Yellowfang and find out if she stole the kits. Firepaw realizes this is Ravenpaw's chance to escape Tigerclaw and sends him to live with the lonely Barley on the farm. Together with Graypaw, he finds Yellowfang and learns that she was innocent, but only went looking for the kits, and that the thief was Clawpaw. The three of them, several ShadowClan elders, and the ThunderClan team, who had arrived just in time, infiltrate the ShadowClan camp and drive out Brokenstar and his retinue. The kits return home, and Firepaw and Graypaw are rewarded with the promotion to warriors—Fireheart and Graystripe.

Soon, while hunting, he encounters his former companion, the housecat Smudge, in the forest and is convinced that his departure to live with the Clan was worth it. The night of the full moon approaches, and Bluestar takes him, Graypaw, and Ravenpaw to the Gathering—a peaceful gathering of all four Clans. At the Gathering, he overhears Ravenpaw recounting the memorable battle with RiverClan in which Redtail died, and Firepaw notices something strange in his story: Ravenpaw says that it was Redtail who killed Oakheart, not the other way around. At the Gathering, Brokenstar, the leader of ShadowClan, announces the exile of WindClan, as the ShadowClan cats need new lands. He also mentions a terrible criminal exiled from his Clan, and the ThunderClan cats begin to suspect Yellowfang of being the perpetrator.

Bluestar takes her three friends and Tigerclaw to the Moonstone, a sanctuary for warrior cats where leaders and medicine cats commune with their ancestors. There, she learns that ShadowClan has attacked ThunderClan's camp in her absence, and all five quickly return home. Along the way, the travelers are attacked by rats, and Bluestar loses a life, claiming she only lost her fifth. ThunderClan repels the attack, but the new deputy, Lionheart, is killed in the attack, and Tigerclaw becomes his successor. Ravenpaw is terrified by Tigerclaw's rise. Bluestar summons Firepaw to her and reveals that she actually lost not five, but seven lives, and that she only has two left. Firepaw notices that the new deputy is accusing the black cat of treason and slandering him to his Clanmates. From Ravenpaw, the red-haired apprentice learns that it was actually Tigerclaw who killed Brighttail.

One day, the domesticated kit named Rusty leaves his owners' garden and goes for a walk in the forest. There, he meets some wildcats who invite him to join their Clan, ThunderClan. The kit accepts and the next day joins the wildcats and becomes an apprentice named Firepaw. At the ceremony, he duels the warrior Longtail, proving himself worthy of joining the Clan. He learns the Clan's customs and traditions, learning to hunt and fight. Firepaw befriends two other apprentices—the dark gray Graypaw and the black Ravenpaw. Together, he explores ThunderClan territory and learns of three other Clans with whom his Clan is at odds. He also meets the ThunderClan medicine cat, Spottedleaf, and develops a crush on her. On the day of his arrival among the wildcats, the Stormclaw herald, Redtail, dies in battle with his neighbors at the hands of the enemy herald, and the warrior Tigerclaw avenges his death by killing the Riverclaw herald, Acorn.

Two moons after Firepaw joins the Clan, he finds an old, mangy she-cat in his territory. He feels sorry for her and feeds and eats her himself, breaking the warrior code. He is caught red-handed. The old she-cat is recognized as ShadowClan's medicine cat, Yellowfang, and is captured, forcing Firepaw to care for her as punishment. Meanwhile, the leader, Bluestar, becomes his mentor. As he cares for Yellowfang, Firepaw becomes increasingly attached to her.
