Ilya wakes up to the sound of his alarm. Outside the window, the light is grey—neither morning nor day. He drinks cold coffee and stares blankly into space. His thoughts are thick and sluggish, like syrup.

The day drags on slowly. Ilya moves from the sofa to the kitchen, then from the kitchen back again. He checks the clock—only two hours have passed. He sits down again, staring out the window. Outside, people are going about their business, but he isn't. The house is quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator.

He picks up a book, but puts it down after five minutes. He turns on some music, but it quickly bores him. He just sits there, listening to the silence. His head feels empty, like a vacant room.

Evening arrives unnoticed. Ilya switches off the light, lies down, and stares at the ceiling. The day is over. Nothing happened. And tomorrow will be exactly the same.

At night, Ilya sleeps poorly. He has nothing but nightmares, yet even then, he longs for sleep. The nightmares are the only thing that make him feel alive. He wakes up once again in a cold sweat, eyes bloodshot, with the taste of blood in his mouth.
